Clinical Insight: Boundaries and Authenticity in Therapy
Traditional clinical training emphasizes maintaining clear boundaries, limiting self-disclosure, and avoiding acceptance of items from clients. These standards are essential for ethical practice.
At the same time, therapy is not one-size-fits-all.
Today, a client purchased coffee during session. This was accepted as a low-value, situationally appropriate gesture, with continued attention to maintaining professional boundaries and clinical judgment.
Research shows that the therapeutic alliance is a key factor in positive treatment outcomes. Clients benefit from clinicians who are not only skilled, but also authentic, present, and relational.
This does not replace ethical standards. It requires thoughtful application of them.
At Passages Counseling Services, we remain committed to ethical practice, clear boundaries, client-centered care, and authentic therapeutic connection.
Effective therapy is not about being a carbon copy. It is about being intentional, professional, and human.
