Recovery Central was another partner who received over $30,000 to help with their substance abuse programming during the pandemic.
Here's one account of how the program was beneficial to her and others:
My name is Lorri Brookins and I am the administrative assistant for Central Christian Church and Recovery Central. I am writing this to tell everyone everything I have learned and gained due to the United Way Grant that Recovery Central received. I, as an almost 6 year recovering alcoholic, am very passionate about helping others and was honored that I was asked to be a part of the team working on the grant. I myself, was able to attend Recovery Coach University and became a peer recovery coach. I will be a certified peer recovery coach as soon as I take my exam. My recovery coach training was truly eye opening. I learned a newer, improved language that is much friendlier towards recoverees like myself. The biggest, most exciting thing that happened to me is that Recovery Central and Central Christian Church asked me to stay on as their part-time administrative assistant.
I truly thank United Way for giving me the opportunity to do all of the things I have been able to do to help improve our recovery community and reduce the stigma that surrounds substance and alcohol misuse disorders.
