Behold the “cooking chair” This chair has followed me from my single days to motherhood. I have no idea how this cheap chair is still standing. I believe it’s being held together with some sort of dried batter. I hate a mess in my space but will accept this messy thing because it keeps my kid on the kitchen. He gets to have experiences with food close up. Short term I will accept this “contained mess” for the long term gain of having a kid that’s at ease around mealtimes.

How do you get your kid to eat salad?! 😳😵‍💫
1. Let your child wash and rip up the leaves with you.
2. Have them help spinning the salad… seriously it’s fun.
3. Talk about how dinosaurs or other animals that eat leafy greens.
4. Family style meals… where you are eating salad.
5. Try a variety of dressings with other preferred foods and take notes of the favorites.
6. No pressure, just exposure.
7. “Salad” can be a loose term… any type of leaf doused in dressing is okay!
8. Wait a long time and keep your cool.

This picture is the first time my three year old has requested salad. How did we get there? Everything listed above. For my own health and sanity, I have salad whenever we serve chicken nuggets. This little kid has slowly over time worked up to this. For the last year or so he’ll ask for a taste or take my bowl. A whole year of nibbles lead to this moment. It can take a long time for children to feel comfortable around certain foods. Take a breath and wait it out 😊 If you feel you are doing “all the things” and something is not right, reach out for help!

Exploring some “slimy” fruit. I try to avoid using the terms “like” and “don’t like” when we are exploring new foods. Instead, we describe. In this instance, this dragonfruit was “too slimy” but we cut it and made a smoothie. Pro tip for slimy fruit…Roll these fruits in cheerio dust or h**p seeds. Bonus: It makes them easier to grasp!
