Parasites have become really trendy in the wellness world, mostly because people are doing parasite "cleanses", having great success, and then sharing about it on social media.
🪱
It's really cool, the stories we hear are CRAZY, the pics I get sent to me are WILD, and it's a very real possibility for anyone, and I have a whole podcast talking about parasites, what I know, the stories I have heard and things I have seen, both personally (I have a personal parasite story...) and professionally helping 1000's of people with their gut health over the years.
🪱
It's also true that parasites DON'T always show up on labs - there are false negatives - but sometimes they DO show up on labs - and this is what that looks like.

Fungal “burden” can drive a lot of inflammatory responses that can impact the brain, including, but not limited to:
💡
1. Histamine responses - mold and yeast can colonize skin, sinus, lungs, gut and trigger mast cells and drive inflammatory responses, even in a non-allergic way.
🤧
2. Mycotoxins - these fungal toxins are mold’s way of protecting itself against enemies - these are toxins that jack up about everything, they can cross the blood-brain-barrier and accumulate in the brain, and they are neurotoxic.
🧠
3. T cell imbalances - fungal infections drive an increased polarization towards Th2 due their common location in “hollow spaces”, but also as a fungal defense mechanism - they don’t want to be killed! Th1 polarization helps clear fungal burden, Th2 inhibits clearance. And this can all lead to Th17, which is tissue-damaging inflammation, a response that is often mounted against fungi and is associated with autoimmune disease progression.

As a functional medicine practitioner, one problem that I see in the wellness medicine world is that more and more people know about the dangers of mold, they suspect mold, but they don't know how to properly test for mold, and there are many opinions on "the best way". When you research mold testing, some experts say "you have to do it this way!" or "this way is completely inaccurate!", but when you talk to clinicians, there are many people getting success in many different ways, so I try to stay out of any particular "camp" or avoid following any one "guru", but rather try to learn from them all to help people be healthier. Here are some examples of how mold can look on labs, and the labs I sometimes use for these tests. The best test is the one that finds levers we can pull, and which one(s) I order depends a lot on the person, their symptoms, their history, their existing labs, their budget, all the things.

1. MOLD MYCOTOXINS IN THE URINE - this is measuring the quantity of mycotoxins being excreted in the urine and comparing to normal ranges. -Mosaic, Real Time Labs, Vibrant Labs

2. MOLD MYCOTOXINS IMMUNE REACTIVITY - this is measuring immune reactivity to mycotoxins produced by mold - MyMycoLab, Cyrex Labs

3. MOLD IIMMUNE REACTIVITY- IgE, IgG, IgA - this is measuring multiple different immune reactivities (allergies vs. sensitivities) to molds themselves - Alletess Labs, Cyrex Labs

4. MOLD COLONIZATION - this indicates Aspergillus or other molds living in the body, likely in the gut. -Mosaic OAT Test.

🪣The Bucket Theory: Why You’re Not Getting Better
If symptoms persist despite a clean lifestyle, your “bucket” is still filling up. You’re either not detoxing efficiently—or there’s hidden exposure.

Your Detox Pathways Matter:

🫁 Breath
Exhalation is a major detox route. Just like an alcohol test detects breath-based toxins—you're breathing out waste daily.

🚽 Urination
Your kidneys filter out toxins and metabolites. If this system’s sluggish, so is your detox.

💩 Bowel Movements
Your most critical detox path. Constipation? Everything backs up. Daily, healthy poops are non-negotiable.

💦 Sweat
Breathing, peeing, and pooping have limits—sweating opens another vital exit. Studies show mold toxins, plastics, and metals leave through sweat.

🧬 Liver + Bile Flow
Your liver processes toxins (via glutathione, methylation, P450 enzymes, etc.) and sends them into bile. If bile isn’t flowing and bowels aren’t moving, detox stalls.

🌀 Lymphatic Flow
Your lymph moves cellular waste. But it needs motion—stagnant lymph equals toxin traffic jams.

🧫 Cell Membranes
Toxins damage and get stuck in membranes—especially mitochondria. Membrane repair and fluidity are essential for cellular detox.

⚡ Mitochondria
Mitochondria run detox. They power the enzymes, fuel the liver, and take a hit from stored toxins. Support them, or nothing moves.

🧬 Genetics
Genes like MTHFR, COMT, GST, and others regulate detox pathways. If they’re impaired, you’ll need targeted support.

Poor blood sugar control does not present clinically as some might expect.
💡
It’s very rarely the ‘obese diabetic with metabolic syndrome’, it’s more likely the thin or slightly overweight mom who is exercising and ‘eating clean’ but can’t seem to lose the last 20 lbs around the mid-section, relies on caffeine, doesn’t sleep well, or is just plain tired.
💡
Sometimes it’s tricky to find, because you may have a glucose reading that looks totally normal or you are told “Your HbATC looks great, your blood sugar is well-controlled” but often these people will see highs and lows if they measure often enough.
💡
There are many underlying issues that can be detected, mostly in or around the mitochondria. I often see signs of a glycolytic shift, lactic acidosis, inability to burn fat, Krebs cycle impairment, etc, not to mention low thyroid or anemia.
The solution is not “EAT MORE CARBS!” or “EAT NO CARBS!”, regardless of the ‘article you recently read online’ but lies somewhere in the middle.
💡
There is no diet book for solving this, every puzzle is unique.

Many underlying health issues that can contribute to enzyme deficiency. LEAKY GUT is the most common culprit because it destroys the plasma membrane of your small intestines. INFLAMMATION from food sensitivities and TOXINS also decreases enzyme production, as well as CHRONIC STRESS, GENETICS, and AGING.  Not to mention, low stomach acid can also play a role because an acidic environment is necessary to activate enzymes responsible for protein digestion.

Stop in today and give digestive enzymes a try

MOST PEOPLE in the wellness world know about probiotics and the importance of the microbiome. Most people also know about digestive enzymes, many times they are very helpful for people. Many people know about glutamine for leaky gut, and every reputable supplement company has a leaky gut powder with glutamine. These are all pretty common supplements that all can be very helpful in the right cases.
💡
Some of the gut-health solutions that I use that people DON’T KNOW AS MUCH ABOUT are things like bovine immunoglobulins, short chain fatty acids, and bile salts like TUDCA.
💡
Bovine immunoglobulins bind antigens in the gut including LPS, a component of dysbiosis and leaky gut. They have been shown to modulate the immune system, even decreasing things like upper respiratory infections in kids. I use SBI Protect from Ortho Molecular Products Inc. as my favorite.
💡
SCFA, like butyrate, help heal and seal leaky gut (or brain), promote immune tolerance, and support microbiome diversity and abundance. They are one of the most important supplements in autoimmunity. I like Tributyrin 350 from or SunButyrate from as my favorites.
💡
Bile salts come from the liver and are released into the gut, and they are how your gut microbiome and liver talk to each other. Bile salts help regulate the microbiome, they help digest food and absorb fat soluble vitamins, and they help detoxify. I like TUDCA from .
💡
All 3 of these could *potentially be* helpful for someone who has done all the basics and is still stuck with their gut healing!

You can find all these in my online store or in the local market!

B vitamins support an incredible array of cellular functions. In my personal office I have a huge, overwhelming poster of all the metabolic processes in the entire body, and I sometimes joke to patients that “B vitamins support ALL OF THAT.” (pointing to the whole thing)

B vitamins support mitochondria, metabolism, methylation, microbiome…..everything. Specific B vitamins have many specific jobs - B9 (folate) supports the methylation cycle and MTHFR gene (amongst many others of course); B12 (cobalamin) supports energy production and reduces homocysteine, an inflammatory marker; B6 supports neurotransmitter production like serotonin and melatonin, B1, B2….they all have specific jobs and you need them all.

A general rule of thumb is that when you give one B vitamin, you should give them all, so I like to use a broad-spectrum B complex most often to support the stress response, unless labs show us a specific need. Not all B’s are created equal however, so you want to choose reputable sources that use things like folate instead of folic acid, and hydroxy- or methyl-cobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin. Sometimes I use methylated B vitamins, but not always, sometimes methylated B vitamins can cause anxiety!

My favorite B vitamin product is called 16B, because it contains 16 different B vitamins.
