Meet Our Team: Alison, CVT 💕💕🐈‍⬛

Alison has been a dedicated team member at Teegarden Veterinary Clinic for almost three years. She holds an Associate of Science degree and graduated from Parkland College with her Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology.

Her favorite procedures include placing IV catheters and performing anesthetized dental cleanings. While she enjoys caring for all dogs and cats, she has a soft spot for Labrador Retrievers and Beagles, as she has them of her own.

Outside of the clinic, Alison shares her home with three cats and two dogs. Her hobbies include helping out on the family farm, reading, spending time outdoors, and spending time with her niece and nephew. Client education is one of her favorite and most rewarding parts of the job.

Happy Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week! 🎉 Do you know what it takes to be a Vet Tech?

A credentialed Vet Tech is a professional with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited program and must pass a rigorous national board exam (LVT, CVT, or RVT). Their daily responsibilities are complex and essential:

• Anesthesia Experts: They monitor and maintain anesthesia during every surgery and procedure, ensuring patient safety minute-by-minute.
• Medical Testing: They perform and analyze in-house laboratory tests (like blood counts and urinalysis) and take X-rays.
• Critical Care Nursing: They provide intense, hands-on nursing care for all hospitalized and emergency patients, from administering IV fluids to managing wound care.
• Client Educators: They are the key communicators who explain complex medical conditions, demonstrate how to give medications, and teach essential post-op care.

These are just a few of their duties! Our Vet Techs have countless other responsibilities and are involved in virtually every procedure that happens at our clinic.

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on the incredible veterinary technicians who are the heart and soul of our clinic. 🩺🐾

Vet techs wear a lot of hats — nurse, lab tech, dental hygienist, anesthetist, radiology tech, nutrition counselor, and animal whisperer (just to name a few). They’re the steady hands, kind hearts, and calm voices behind every patient visit.

To celebrate, we’ll be sharing a few fun spotlights on our amazing techs all week long — giving you a peek into the people who care for your pets with so much skill, compassion, and love. 💚

🌟 September Pet of the Month: Frank! 🐾

We’ve had lots of adorable kittens featured lately, so this month we thought it was time to spotlight a puppy!

Meet Frank, a recent graduate of our Puppy Preschool class. He did a fantastic job learning his basic commands and practicing good manners. Puppies can be a handful, but with proper socialization and consistent training, they grow into well-behaved and confident adult dogs.

Way to go, Frank — we’re so proud of you!

Unleashed dogs and uncaged cats = instant chaos 😂 For everyone’s safety (yours, your pet’s, and our staff’s), please bring dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier. If you forget, just give us a call from the parking lot—we’ll bring you one so your pet stays safe and secure. 🐾💙

👍🐾 Luna gives us a thumbs up! 🐾👍

We got to see the sweetest polydactyl kitty, Luna, today. Cats are usually born with 18 toes, but polydactyls like Luna come with a few extras—sometimes even enough to look like they have little thumbs! ✨

Polydactyl cats are also known as Hemingway cats after the author who kept a whole crew of them at his Key West home.

We think Luna’s extra toes make her extra special and her “thumbs up” says she agrees! 💖🐱

🐾 August Pet(s) of the Month 🐾
Linus, Nigel, Onslow, and Pippa

We’re currently helping a family with four cats diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). While this used to be considered a devastating and untreatable disease, there is now real hope for cats with FIP thanks to new treatment options! ✨

FIP develops when a common feline coronavirus mutates inside the body. Most cats that carry this virus never become sick, but in some, it progresses to FIP. It can appear in two main forms:
• Wet (effusive) – fluid buildup in the abdomen or chest
• Dry (non-effusive) – inflammation affecting organs such as the eyes, kidneys, or brain

Signs may include fever, weight loss, poor appetite, lethargy, breathing difficulties, or a swollen belly.

🌟 The positive news: advances in antiviral medications are changing the outlook for cats with FIP. Many are now going on to live happy, healthy lives after treatment!

Currently they are receiving treament and have been responding positively to it. We hope that they will continue to thrive and have long, happy, and healthy lives! 🐱
