The subvastus approach for knee replacement is a muscle-sparing, minimally invasive technique that accesses the knee joint without cutting the quadriceps tendon or muscle. Instead Dr. Strohmeyer moves the quadricep to the side when accessing the knee joint. Using the Mako robot for insertion combined with the subvastus approach provides the benefit of precise implant placement with robotics with less pain and quicker return of function from the muscle sparing approach.

Dr. Garret Schuchart a former tight end at the college level is a is a fellowship-trained Orthopedic spine surgeon. He was the lead doctor in treatment plan options for the 2026 Iron Dog Champion Nick Olstad after he sustained a lumbar burst fracture on a training ride in 2025.

Dr. Greg Strohmeyer the Matanuska Susitna Valley’s only specialty-trained trauma surgeon, and Iron Dog veteran who worked with Dr. Schuchart on initial observations for Nick Olstad. Dr Strohmeyer specializes in the subvastus approach for knee replacement is a muscle-sparing, minimally invasive technique that accesses the knee joint without cutting the quadriceps tendon or muscle, instead lifting the vastus medialis muscle Knee can't use. Using the Mako robot instrument for insertion with the subvastus approach ensures optimum implant placement.
