Some people ask how I reset my brain and nervous system between sessions. This. I do this.

Last week, I read a story about a young man named Michael who begged his father for conditional love. This deeply affected me.

I respect religious beliefs, but I disagree with using religion to traumatize children. We all have expectations for our children, but that doesn’t mean they should be deprived of unconditional love to meet those expectations. Sexuality doesn’t define a person’s wholeness.

The recent SCOTUS ruling legalizing conversion therapy exacerbates the problems caused by parents who condition their love. Parenting is challenging, but making a child hide a significant part of themselves just to be loved is abusive and traumatizing.

Sexuality isn’t a choice. If it were, kids like Michael wouldn’t need to beg for love. There wouldn’t be an epidemic of un-housed children or children who feel like their only choice is death. I choose to love my daughter, and she chooses to love me despite my parenting mistakes. Raising self-loving, confident, empathetic, and tolerant children is challenging, but it’s worth it.

Also, my daughter checked ✔️ me. 🫣 I’m supposed to tell the world that she and her fiancé celebrated 5 years with the engagement… not 4. My bad 😐🌈

Long story short, GreenSpace is growing into a bigger space!

Black History Month is a reminder, not a limit. Our contributions are constant-and no amount of racism can erase what we’ve done and what we will continue to do.

Black culture is strength, born-from survival, shaped by community, expressed through creativity that has changed the world. We turn struggle into style, pain into purpose, and history into something unstoppable. ✊🏾

There’s a difference between ignorance, rooted, and unawareness and willful ignorance.

People often ask me about my experience as a black woman and clinician in Alaska a space that is overwhelmingly white. What I’ve learned is that many non—Black people I encounter are ignorant, not out of malice, but because they’ve never been meaningfully exposed to black culture. That lack of exposure often leads to assumptions about who I am or where I come from.

There is often a genuine curiosity about my identity and how I experienced the world. When I met with curiosity, I take it as an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and offer a more accurate, nuance perspective of my culture in live experience.

That said, I have also encountered willful ignorance-people who would rather be “right“ than informed. Those individuals do not get access to me, my story and damn sure not my clinical expertise.

Don’t get me wrong-I experienced wolf of ignorance from my own folks too, especially when people question my choice to live in Alaska. I apply the same perspective across the board. I’m always open to challenging stereotypes-both about the Alaskan experience and the people who live here.

“You can’t blame mental health for gun violence and then stay silent while the mental health system is dismantled.”

Defunding mental health care is a policy choice~and today that choice was made. This isn’t fiscal responsibility. It’s abandonment.

Therapist headshot 📸 vs. the humans behind them ❤️

Therapy is what we do, not all of who we are! We are pulling back the curtain on our professional images and showing what our behind the scenes looks like.

Therapists what’s behind your headshot? Let’s embrace the humans behind the screens!

Thanks .mentalhealth for the Reel inspiration.
