👨⚕️ Know Your Skin: Types of Skin Cancer
Skin cancer can take many forms, and early detection is key. The three main types are:
Basal cell carcinoma – the most common type, originating in the deepest layer of the skin (the basal layer). It usually appears as a small, pearly bump that may bleed or ulcerate.
Squamous cell carcinoma – develops in the middle layer of the skin (the squamous cells). It can appear as a scaly red patch or a firm, raised lump.
Melanoma – the rarest but most serious, developing in the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in the top layer of the skin (epidermis). It can spread to other parts of the body if untreated.
Other less common types include precancerous lesions like actinic keratosis, Merkel cell carcinoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, and cutaneous lymphoma.
It's important to note that all skin cancers can be potentially serious and should be diagnosed and treated promptly. Regular skin self-exams and professional screenings are crucial for early detection and prevention.
