Caring for someone with dementia? If the person becomes agitated, try these tips to calm things down gently and positively:

• Speak softly and use a calm, reassuring tone. Avoid confrontation or anything that feels like chastisement.

• Give them space. Leaving the room for a short time can give them time to settle.

• Try distraction: Talk about something they enjoy, make their favourite drink, or even ask for their help with a small task. The offer of a cup of tea can work wonders.

• Change the setting: Move to another room, put on soothing music, or switch to a comforting TV programme.

Familiar items, such as photographs or special blankets, can also provide a lot of comfort.
