Oh lavender, as for many others, you were my gateway oil. Years ago my friend mentioned that she ground her teeth terribly in her sleep and that her dog had recently chewed up her brand new $600 mouth guard. When I asked if she had replaced it, she said, "No, I told my naturopath what happened and she told me all I needed to do was to put a drop of lavender essential oil on my pillow before going to bed. I've been doing so and I don't grind my teeth anymore."
My first thought, which I expressed out loud, was, "Yuck, doesn't that make your pillow greasy?!?" "No," she said, "it's not oily." She was right, essential oils aren't oily at all. Extracted through careful steam distillation, resin tapping, and cold pressing, essential oils are the pure essence of a plant and are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they come.
My second thought was, “Wow, really? I’ve been grinding my teeth and could sure use such a simple, cheap, and accessible remedy!” I bought my first bottle of lavender oil and, voila’, no more teeth grinding!
Then last year, my friends Darby and Mel introduced me to Young Living Essential Oils. After weeks of hearing Darby go on and on about these oils, she brought her diffuser to a Girl’s Night at my house. They had me at the first sniff. My entire body came alive! The mood changed in the room noticeably for the better, and we were having a damn good time prior to the essential oils!
For the past five months, I’ve been building my Young Living Essential Oils (YLEOs) Library and doing a ton of research on these oils. Here’s some of what I’ve learned so far about Lavender.
Known as the “Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils (EOs), lavender is:
calming/anti-anxiety (I suffer from anxiety and PTSD. Diffusing it or applying it topically instantly calms and relaxes me.)
heals acne, burns, cuts, and insect bites/stings
heals dry/chapped skin and lips (I put a few drops in my homemade lip balms and lotions.)
relieves pain (lavender diluted with a carrier oil on my tummy relieves cramps from period!).
relieves hay fever symptoms
eliminates dandruff (I put a few drops in my homemade hair serum)
repels insects (So much yummier than smelling like citronella or DEET!)
Ok. That’s all for now. Til next time, May the Oils be with You.
