Most babies, especially breastmilk fed babies under 6 months old, NEED to eat overnight. 😮
I KNOW how hard it is. I was a full-time working mom with all of my kids, and none of them were “good” sleepers👼. I would honestly have done anything to get a little more sleep at night. 😴
BUT… a 2015 study showed that 79% of babies 6-12 months old were still waking at least once overnight and 61% had at least one overnight feed.🤓
If babies were really supposed to be sleeping 12 hours by 12 weeks, they all would be. “Sleeping through the night” at this age should be the exception, not the rule. 🤱
There are tons of products and “programs” out there on the market right now that can actually cause babies to sleep through their hunger cues. Often (but not always) these babies are not making up the calories during the day. Around month 4, their weight gain drops or even slows entirely.😢
And honestly, a lot of babies just can’t sleep long stretches period, no matter what “method” you use.🤷♀️ There are babies who sleep long stretches and babies who don’t and neither of these is a bad baby. Everyone is different. Every baby is different.👩🍼
So what do you do? Instead of focusing on stretching out the time between feeds and trying to make a baby stop eating overnight, focus on getting yourself back to sleep as soon as possible when baby wakes up. 😴Two or three overnight feedings aren’t terrible if your baby goes right back to sleep (and so do you).

In 1900, Jessie Sleet Scales became the first Black public health nurse in the United States of America after being hired on a trial basis to help treat Black immigrants that were suffering from tuberculosis in New York. As a public health nurse, Scales did more than treat her patients and urge them to seek hospital care when necessary, she also helped those she cared for find work that enabled them to become self-sufficient. Scales was so successful that she was offered a permanent position as a public health nurse and paved the way for more Black nurses to practice in the field. She is credited with providing care to hundreds and working to end health inequities in marginalized communities.

working and breastfeeding!
"Hi! I’m so grateful for your podcast! I’m still going strong breastfeeding my one year old and am so proud of our journey together. I’ve hardly had any community to learn how to do this and have relied on your podcast and the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding book. I am grateful to have a job though that has been so supportive of my child and my breastfeeding needs. I’m a pastor, and here’s a picture of me nursing during worship in my robe. When I first started at this church, my baby was about six months. I was commissioned (officially committed to work there) in worship while nursing and was nervous about how my new congregation would take this. But I had to feed my baby in that moment! Afterwards I had a bunch of moms come up to me and say, “That was so awesome! Do they make breastfeeding friendly worship robes?” I realized then that me nursing openly at church helped model how I want churches to support parents and children, and what I need as an employee there!"

Look at what we just got in at The Mind Body Collective!
Literally, ONE drop of breastmilk can make a difference in your baby’s health.
Colostrum, which is produced in the first few days of breastfeeding, contains between five million and twenty-five million white blood cells per teaspoon. White blood cells are responsible for fighting bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections.

🤱 BREASTFEEDING FACT 🤱
Seeing others breastfeed increases the likelihood of breastfeeding.
The value of social support on a breastfeeding journey should never be underestimated! There is a strong correlation between having a strong community of support and meeting our own breastfeeding goals.
One very important piece of support is seeing other mothers breastfeed. Some of us never saw a baby eat from the breast until we had our own children. In many traditional cultures, where breastfeeding is not stigmatized, Children grow up seeing babies fed from the breast and are familiar with the process before they ever have babies of their own. This normalization and familiarity drives measurably higher breastfeeding rates.
Watch your friends and family breastfeed, learn, and breastfeed in public as you feel comfortable. You never know who might see you and be inspired! ❤️

Container Syndrome is a term used to describe the lack of skill in infants who are not allowed ample movement opportunities. Container Baby Syndrome is the result of an infant being placed in a container for an excessive amount of time during the day. This extended time leads to structural, movement, and behavioral challenges as a result.
Baby containers include baby equipment and items such as:
👣Restrictive playpens
👣Crib
👣Car seats
👣Strollers
👣Bumbo seats
👣Bouncy seats and swings
👣Rockers
👣Nursing cushions
👣Vibrating chairs
👣Jumpers
👣Exersaucers
👣Positioning pillows
👣Slings
👣Floor seats
👣Infant swings
👣Walkers
👣Jumpers
All of the time spent in these baby containers adds up! When in a positioning device such as the ones listed above, little ones are limited in the motor development that results from stretching, wiggling, turning, reaching, and otherwise moving.

You guys. Don't try to DIY your baby's formula. You know this, right? Yes, there are people alive who were fed PET milk (evaporated milk) as babies and lived to tell the tale. The babies who died aren't here to speak for themselves. Infant mortality in the 1960's was FOUR times higher than it is now for white babies, and TWICE as high for black babies (yes, infant mortality for black babies is still a huge concern). Additionally, homemade formulas put babies at risk for stressed kidneys, intestinal blood loss/anemia, severe electrolyte imbalances leading to death, and SCURVY (OMG seriously).
Cow's milk is a great food for you IF YOU ARE A BABY COW. If you are raising a human, you need to give human milk, or the next best thing- commercial infant formula. ANY brand will do. Formula in 2022 is the healthiest and safest that it has ever been.
Love and hugs from your favorite IBCLC, Pam

If your baby is medically fragile, you should only be using ready-to-feed formulas. This is because there is a tiny risk that powdered formula can be contaminated with dangerous bacteria. Fortunately, when this happens, the FDA is quick to recall any suspicious lots of powdered formula. Here is information about the current recall: https://www.npr.org/2022/02/18/1081697742/stop-using-these-baby-formulas-the-fda-says-after-4-infants-are-hospitalized
Abbott Nutrition voluntarily recalled some powdered formulas sold under the Similac, Alimentum and EleCare brands. The FDA is investigating links to four bacterial infections, one of which was fatal.

I attended a great webinar this morning about normal infant crying. They highlighted an app that I hadn't heard of before- the Period of Purple Crying App. This is a tool that parents can use to track their baby's crying. Part of learning about purple crying, is that it is a completely normal developmental stage in small infants that will pass with time. http://purplecrying.info/sub-pages/purpleapp/purpleapp.php If you download and use the app, let me know what you think!
The Period of PURPLE Crying program mobile app is intended for parents of newborns who have received the PURPLE program education from a trained educator or medical provider.

(For this one, we would like any one who helps with breastfeeding to fill it out no matter what your back ground is. IBCLCs, CLCs, Doulas, La Leche League Leaders, Doctors, Midwives, Nurses, we want as much data as possible.)
The research on ni**le shields is limited. The purpose of these surveys is to get a sense of how and why ni**le shields are actually be used by families and how lactation professionals play into this data.
Please share these where ever you can so we can get a large number of responses. This information will be used to help inform us as to the current state or ni**le shield use. The data will be used for future conference presentations, hopefully will be published in a journal, a podcasts, and for training of lactation professionals.
