May is officially recognized as Healthy Vision Month
1. The Power of the Comprehensive Eye Exam
The centerpiece of Healthy Vision Month is the push for comprehensive dilated eye exams. Unlike a simple vision screening (the "Which is better, 1 or 2?" test), a dilated exam allows an optometrist to:
View the back of the eye clearly.
Detect early signs of Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Macular Degeneration before symptoms appear.
Identify systemic health issues like high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
2. Know Your Family History
Many eye conditions are hereditary. May is the perfect time to talk to your relatives about their optical history. If a parent or sibling has glaucoma, your risk increases significantly. Knowing this allows your doctor to set a more proactive "baseline" for your eye pressure and nerve health.
3. The "20-20-20" Rule for Digital Strain
With the increase in remote work and digital device use, Computer Vision Syndrome is a major focus this May. To protect your eyes:
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
This relaxes the ciliary muscles in the eye that get fatigued from constant near-focusing.
4. UV Protection
As we head into the sunnier months, May serves as a reminder that UV protection isn't just for your skin.
The Risk: Chronic UV exposure can lead to cataracts and photokeratitis (essentially a "sunburn" of the cornea).
The Fix: Ensure your sunglasses are labeled "100% UV Protection" or "UV400." Polarized lenses help with glare, but UV protection is the medical necessity.
