We didn't get nearly enough pictures, but we had a great last cookout of the summer for Labor Day! Residents, staff, and family enjoyed the time together with great food and desserts. As summer comes to a close, we are appreciative of the warm weather memories and looking forward to a new season and new memories together! 🍂

Our LifeGuidance residents have been busy having a blast this week. First, they enjoyed a delicious outing to Longhorn Steakhouse for a special lunch. Then, we brought the party home to celebrate all of our August birthdays!

We enjoyed going aboard the Sea Mist for a fun narrated tour of the Thimble Islands in Branford! We enjoyed looking at the differences between the islands and noticing things about the Victorian-era summer cottages on them. We decided we weren't sure if we would be able to live the island life however, it was fun to choose which homes we'd prefer!

Every other Tuesday, the book club at Atria Grass Valley gathers to dive into exciting reads, and their recent selection was no exception! Residents read "Blind Descent" by Nevada Barr, a gripping mystery set in the caves of Carlsbad Caverns.

To enrich the experience, resident Marge shared a stunning slideshow of photos from Carlsbad Caverns National Park, bringing the book vividly to life.

They're already looking forward to their next exciting read!

For Richard, architecture was never just a job – it was a lifelong adventure in creativity. For more than five decades, he designed everything from libraries and hospitals to luxury homes and award-winning churches.

“I worked on so many different kinds of projects, with so many wonderful people,” he says. “I was very lucky. The real reward is seeing your buildings finished and people enjoying them.”

Now a resident at Atria Cutter Mill, Richard continues to inspire us with stories from a remarkable career.

Friendship, like flowers, starts as a sprout. And, with time and care, it blossoms into something beautiful!

Shirley, one of our wonderful Resident Ambassadors at Atria Park of Vintage Hills and an avid gardener, inspired fellow resident Phyllis to start her own garden this spring by sharing seeds – and now Phyllis’s garden bed is in full bloom!

It’s a beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to try something new — or to make a new friend along the way.

Residents at Atria Draper Place hit the track with their own customized boxcars. "The best part was sitting around the table chatting and laughing with one another while we were making a mess painting them," shares Barbara.

From building the little wooden cars to giving them signature paint jobs, everyone was a winner even before the competition began!

Meet Terry, a proud U.S. Army veteran and resident of Atria at Hometown. 🇺🇸

After 20 years of military service – including a combat tour in Vietnam and a career in Army JAG – Terry went on to work in federal investigations, covering high-profile cases for agencies like the SEC and Department of Justice. Through it all, one thing stayed constant: his deep commitment to service and integrity.

“I’ve had a great life,” he says. “Every turn seemed to come with a blessing. And I love it here at Hometown,” he adds. “It’s peaceful. We don’t have any stress, any problems, anything. When we got here, I felt like I was in heaven."

We visited the local Niantic Bay Playhouse and were excited to see how it was transformed from Niantic Cinema to the playhouse it is today. We enjoyed a great performance of one of the most famous musicals ever written: Hello Dolly! Our residents are looking forward to going back for the musical, White Christmas this winter 🎦

Meet Jay, a resident at Atria Grapevine whose love for quilting is matched only by her love for her husband, Jimmy.

Jay and Jimmy moved in nearly three years ago, after his dementia diagnosis, and they’ve found more than just care – they’ve found community. “We know everybody – all the workers, everybody – and it’s so friendly. That’s a real support system for me and Jimmy.”

When she’s not spending time with Jimmy or her neighbors, Jay stays busy stitching quilts, table runners and binding projects for friends (and even her sister). “It’s very calming to me. I enjoy it. There’s a real sense of accomplishment.”

She even transformed her pantry into a cozy sewing nook – a space dedicated to her personal passion.

We had a wonderful picnic at Camp Harkness. It was a perfect day, and we were able to get right on the sand, and enjoy the oceans views and sunshine. A special appreciation for our resident Evelyn, and all of her and her husbands work with the Developmental Disabilities Association which donated to the Camp Harkness Foundation. The funds were used to build a pavilion for Camp Harkness guests and campers to cool off from the summer heat!

We had so much fun with our Chef Showdown event! Our Culinary Director, Tom and Life Guidance Director, Kwinnie battled it out for the 2025 Chef Showdown trophy. The competition was even and it ended it a tie! Looks like they'll be sharing the trophy. We will have to plan a tie breaker event to solve this. 👨‍🍳
