A transition program to help students with disabilities learn employability skills.

Our interns had the opportunity yesterday to have a life experience! We spent the day on our City Bus Trip. We took the city bus system from Allen Hospital all the way to Thunder Ridge Apartments in Cedar Falls! This trip includes six bus transfers and lasts all day, but it gives the interns a real world view of what it takes to use public transportation.

BIG Shoutout to Candy, Dustin, and Bethany of Thunder Ridge Apartments in Cedar Falls for hosting us and discussing what it takes to rent and live on your own! It is so informative and our interns get a chance to ask a ton of questions! They are always so gracious with their time and we can't thank them enough!

We even snuck in a stop to Sub City for lunch. Consensus is that Sub City is better than Subway!

We are a couple weeks into our second rotation. The interns are getting more comfortable with their new job areas and learning daily tasks. We are building upon new skills that they already learned in our first rotation. A special thank you to our departments and mentors for all of their time and support with helping us learn and grow.

Here at Project SEARCH we talk about giving back to our community. Last week our interns had the opportunity to do just that by ringing bells for the Salvation Army! Interns braved the colder weather to ring for 4 hours and raised just shy of $900! Special thanks to Betsie Driscol-Nichols for helping us out, and Natalie Hunter for bringing the holiday cheer! Our Project SEARCH interns had the opportunity to take their first business tour of the year last week. We toured the Waterloo Regional Airport and found out about all of the different jobs within the Airport! Special thank you to Airport Manager Steven Kjergaard for taking the time to show us around! WOW! Our first 10 week rotation has flown by quickly. Everyone has made progress and learned many new skills they can carry to their next rotation. Thank you to all of our departments for helping our interns grow and learn from their experiences.

We are a little over halfway into our first rotations and learning a lot. The interns are beginning to feel comfortable in their departments and all are doing great!! We were also able to hand out some new mentor shirts. Thanks for all you do for us.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! To our first Employee of the Month, Cayman "CJ" Jones!! CJ has done an outstanding job to begin his rotations in PT at North Crossing and Cardiac Rehab. His work ethic and positive attitude have not gone unnoticed in these departments, with many compliments coming his way. Keep up the great work, CJ!!!

We've had a great couple of weeks kicking off Project SEARCH this year. In our orientation weeks, we have had a wide variety of events to get to know the layout of the hospital, some of the great people we will get to work with, and exploring potential internships. The interns participated in lots of hospital scavenger hunts, department tours and speakers, interviews, and some team building exercises. It's going to be a great year!
