Press Release: BHCPH Urges Mosquito Bite Prevention: West Nile Virus Detected in Black Hawk County Mosquitoes

Recent mosquito monitoring in Black Hawk County has found West Nile Virus present in adult mosquitoes. Increasing levels of West Nile Virus are common at this time of year, and more positive tests are likely. With the rising levels of the virus, the risk of human cases also increases. Therefore, residents are advised to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

To reduce the risk of mosquito bites, people should:
• Use EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, 2-undecanone, or para-menthane-diol.
• Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants, or use clothing treated with permethrin.
• Use air conditioning or make sure that doors and windows have screens that are properly secured to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

Mosquitoes can lay eggs in containers of water as small as a bottle cap. To prevent mosquitoes from reproducing near your home:
• Remove or empty containers that hold water, including old tires.
• Change the water in bird baths and wading pools at least once a week.
• Clean rain gutters and downspouts to prevent standing water.
• Cover rain barrels and pools that don’t have chlorine.

Following these steps will help you protect yourself, your family, and the community from West Nile Virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses.

There’s been a theme at our office the last couple weeks… severe bug bites! Some people are coming in with it as their sole issue and others have been found and impossible to miss during skin checks. We have treatment options for you but our best advice is PREVENTION! Here are a few tips for our Cedar Valley community:
1) DEET bug spray for mosquitoes (yep DEET, it effectively protects against bites from disease-carrying insects like mosquitoes and ticks, which can transmit illnesses like West Nile virus, Lyme disease, and Zika virus).
2) Bug Soother - the green bottle, smells like vanilla - great for gnats!
3) Absorbine Junior - no see ums, enough said.
These are our personal recommendations based on effectiveness and surviving Iowa summers, especially growing up by the Mississippi. Sometimes you’ll find us putting on all 3 if it becomes a matter of survival😆

If you have your own secrets to success with bug bite prevention please share in the comments! Also see the AAD link below for more tips.

Although most bug bites are harmless, some can spread dangerous diseases like Zika virus, dengue, Lyme disease, and malaria. Particularly if you’re visiting areas with known insect-borne diseases, it’s important to take steps to reduce your risk.

Sad to say we are hearing about and seeing the outcomes of this trend first-hand! People, especially young adults and teenagers who appear to be influenced by social media and their peers, are using the UV index to determine when to tan (a tan is still damage!). The scary part is that they are looking for a high index, which really just means more damage and should be avoided or at least extra precautions to protect your skin and eyes. Self-tanner and bronzers are the best way to get sun-kissed appearing skin without the risk of aging your skin and cancer! Please discuss this issue with your kids and help them understand how to properly interpret the UV index ☀️

Experts are sounding the alarm.
