                                        Diet.....
As a health coach I really don't like the word diet or the implied meanings that go with it. But as I find myself at a crossroads with symptoms that have no explanation (again) and digging to find answers (again), I think I've landed on the culprit that explains it all - Histamine Intolerance.
Histamines are chemicals that are not only involved in an allergic reaction, but they are responsible for some vital functions in the body, like stomach acid production, sleep/wake cycle, motivation to do things and so much more.
However some people can't break it down for the body to excrete, so it builds up. Causing bloating, digestive issues, tired but wired feeling, insomnia, brain fog, increased susceptibility to allergies, decreased metabolism (with as much body movement as I've done this summer I should've lost weight but gained 10lbs), as well as allergies other inflammatory responses.
So what's one to do...the first thing is to adopt a low histamine diet. With all the diets I work with people on, this one is probably the most restrictive and most challenging. It's not 'intuitive' like gluten free or dairy free, so you have to learn what is high histamine and what is not.
I've had and have added food allergies & intolerances for most of my life - especially since my hysterectomy 19 years ago. I'm used to dietary restrictions-but this is probably the most restrictive.
I did a strict trial over the weekend and already feel better. But now I need to keep it up, eating more like what you see in the picture without the dressings, mayo & salsa.
So I'm focusing on what I can eat instead of what I 'can't.' I'm getting lists ready for menu planning and I'm going to concentrate my attention on eating well as an act of loving my body so it can heal.
Yes it'll take more planning, but it'll be worth it.
Have you struggled with a special diet? Been limited on food choices? I'd love to hear more of your story.
