🎒 Back-to-School Stress? Here Are 5 Ways to Help Ease the Transition 🧠
The start of a new school year can bring excitement and stress — for kids, teens, and parents alike. At Firefly Counseling, we want to share a few simple tips to help make this transition a little smoother:
1️⃣ Start Routines Early
Begin adjusting sleep and wake times at least two weeks before school starts. Predictable routines can lower anxiety and boost focus. A big part of this is starting to limit electronics and screen time to mimic a school day that will require focus.
2️⃣ Talk About It
Let your child express their worries. Normalize their feelings and offer reassurance — listening goes a long way.
3️⃣ Prepare Together
Involve your child in back-to-school prep like organizing supplies, choosing outfits, or visiting the school. It builds confidence and reduces uncertainty.
4️⃣ Limit Overscheduling
Keep after-school activities manageable. Kids need downtime too, especially in the first few weeks.
5️⃣ Model Calm
Kids pick up on your stress. Take care of your own mental health and show them healthy ways to manage big emotions.
🧠 Back-to-school stress is normal, but if it starts to interfere with sleep, appetite, or daily functioning, it might be time to talk to a mental health professional.
