It's spooky season, which means it's time for a PSA on cosmetic contact lenses and their threat to vision health! The American Academy of Optometry and Academy Academy of Ophthalmology released a statement this month explaining that patients using cosmetic lenses from stores or websites without eye care professional supervision or prescriptions have experienced adverse events and complications, including vision loss and serious infections. In 2018, the US FDA evaluated over 300 cosmetic contact lenses and found that 60% of the counterfeit contact lenses and 27% of the unapproved contact lenses were found to have microbial contamination🦠, and were a threat to consumer health and safety.
