I cannot believe it's been 100 years since the creation of Negro History Week, which has become what it is known as today: ❤️ Black 🖤 History 💚 Month!

I wonder if Dr. Carter G. Woodson could have imagined this?

That, despite the challenges Black people in our nation still face (and let's be 💯 there are still many challenges), we would be able to have a month to celebrate how far we have come.

I wonder if he could imagine that a Black woman, like me, would create a community where Black women could have rich conversations about what's impacting the health of Black women.

I don't know if he could have imagined it, but I am proud to say that creating The Roundtable is a way I can continue that legacy of advancing equality.

With The Roundtable, you'll receive:

➡️ A monthly live session to break down complex topics with peers and experts,
➡️ A private community thread for ongoing reflection, questions, and support,
➡️ Plus, full access to past Roundtables and an archive you can return to anytime.

Tap the link in bio to join The Roundtable and move from overwhelm to grounded, ethical decisions.

In this week's Community Letter, I dive into the harsh reality that Black women often have to provide evidence of our suffering in order to be taken seriously.

A 2026 review published in "Nursing in Critical Care" shared how Black women experience everything from the minimization of their symptoms to the ignoring of their pain management requests.

Before you say, other women experience that too, I will say yes, you are right.

However, when it happens to other women, the fault is often placed on the system. When it happens to Black women, the fault is more often than not placed on the individual.

That in and of itself creates the health disparities that clinicians, researchers, and health leaders are fighting to eradicate.

You can learn more about that review in our Community Letter, "The Burden of Proof Should Never Fall on the Patient" at EBWHCommunity.com.

There are 3 things that I wish I’d known sooner about how policy, systems, and bias shape Black women’s health.

1️⃣. When health policies are made without Black women in mind, they can widen health disparities.
2️⃣. When systems aren't designed for Black women, they often miss the unique barriers they face.
3️⃣. When bias goes unchecked, it can create assumptions that keep Black women from getting preventative care.

These lessons could’ve saved me from mistakes and setbacks. However, knowing them will give you a clear advantage in delivering care that actually meets Black women’s needs.

Which of these will you start addressing this week? Comment below.

What if Black women were actually listened to instead of dismissed in healthcare settings?

Recently, I spoke with Dr. Wylin D. Wilson (Associate Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke and author of Womanist Bioethics) about how her story led her to rethink the ethics of care.

In this conversation, we cover everything from why centering Black women changes everything to what community-led health can look like beyond policy.

Drop me a "SEND" below, and I'll send you the link to watch this week's community letter.

This was a hard community letter to write, because like many I’m deeply concerned about the direction the U.S. is headed.

While there is a temptation to bury our heads in the sand, that isn’t a possibility for everyone.

We might not be able to simply escape what is happening, but that doesn’t mean we have to continue with business as usual.

I don’t have the “right” answers. However, I do have a few resources that have helped me. And, I hope can help you too.

Resources that help make sense of care, policy, and community in uncertain times

As an autoimmune patient I’ve learned that what’s considered “normal” in healthcare spaces is often dependent upon who is included (and excluded) in the research.

Even when that exclusion isn’t necessarily intentional, it still doesn’t erase the potential harm it will cause.

That’s why this weeks community letter is a reminder why we shouldn’t ignore the context.

How health literacy helps prevent harm in care and advocacy

Today is my first installment of The Community Letter, which I hope creates space for us to have more conversations about the unique challenges that Black women face on their health journey.

When we hear that Black women in the U.S. are 3 times more likely to die of pregnancy and childbirth related complications, that shouldn’t feel like a foregone conclusion.

It should feel like a call to action.

More of my thoughts are in the letter. Please share yours in the comments below.

Did I write a Substack to share all my favorite food bloggers who cook with soul? Yes, and ain’t no shame in my game!

As someone who grew up around my grandmother’s cooking, I know there is nothing like the smell of delicious food to calm my often chaotic life.

Often, on these interwebs, I see a lot of unhealthy debate about:

✔️ What’s healthy and what's not healthy to eat?
✔️ What should we limit and what should we avoid altogether?
✔️ Which habits are actually ‘healthy’ and which ones are disordered eating in disguise?

The point is, with so much (mis)information, we can forget the actual joy of eating. You know, because we actually like the food we’re eating, not because we’re concerned about the opinions others have about our food choices.

So, if you’re looking for good, nutrient-dense food that actually tastes good, check out my round-up of my go-to food bloggers!

Do you believe some other food bloggers should have been on the list? Drop their names below!
