In 2008, the Lawrence City Commission approved to open the 1st Natural Burial Cemetery in the state of Kansas. It is located on the northside of Oak Hill Cemetery. Deemed an all-natural area, the grounds are not maintained or mowed. Only cardboard or other eco-friendly caskets may be used, and no embalming, artificial flowers, or figurines are permitted.
