Meet Austen: "This is my sweet, funny, charming son, Austen. He will be 4 in June and he loves swimming. He has been a signed model since he was 11 months old. When Austen was 9 months old, I (his mom) noticed he was taking more time to reach certain milestones. I asked people around me and professionals, and they reassured me it was something he could grow out of.

Through much advocating, I was able to get Austen an evaluation and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder earlier this year. In the months of advocating, Austen had a seizure last year that scared all of us. We found out he has focal and partial seizures.

Through the many trials and tribulations, we try to educate everyone on autism and epilepsy. Austen and I have decided to change the world. We want to take our experiences, and help other families. We have decided to start the conversation, and the fight to advocate for a public school for children with autism in Philadelphia.

I realize, as a mother, I will always fight for my child. However, I believe it’s time to fight for all the children to get them the best resources and services they deserve."

Access to applied behavior analysis for people with autism who need it can lead to communication, connection, safety, independence and the ability to self-advocate. The practice of ABA has evolved over time and comes in different forms (i.e. naturalistic teaching, discrete trial) that are based on the needs of the individual.
