as humans we've invented many, many things. perhaps the most dangerous invention was our concept of 'time' and its triumvirate - past, present and future.
when we only look backwards, into the 'past', we see where we were once upon a time- try driving a car by just looking in the rear view mirror and see how far that gets you.
when we gaze off into the 'future' we recognize our own extinction. amongst god's creatures we are alone in knowing we will die one day, so we tend to see danger everywhere. and even though we push this knowledge into our unconscious it still makes us afraid because, yes, it's all gonna end one day.
in yoga, the 'past' is just memories (smrti) which exist only as chemicals in our brain cells, but still heavily influences our 'present' especially when we're not paying attention or acting on autopilot.
likewise, the 'future' is only a fantasy (vikalpa) based upon ideas, dreams, desires, etc. while it does not exist in any way, it also influences everything we believe about the trajectory of our lives.
so, a yogi argues that there is nothing called 'time', that there is only 'now' - that this is where the juice is. 'now' is the only place where existence can happen. if you really wish to be alive and to experience all that life has to offer, then there's no better time than the 'present'. this is where your body is, this is where your breathing is, this is where you should be. oh, and be grateful you're not dead yet.
