Pathfinder International We believe reproductive health is the foundation for a just and equitable world.

We are driven by the conviction that all people, regardless of where they live, have the right to decide whether and when to have children, to exist free from fear and stigma, and to lead the lives they choose. As a global health organization with locally led, community-driven programs, we support women to make their own reproductive health decisions. We work with local partners to advance contrac

At the Africa Primary Health Care Forum 2025, we joined other partners from across the continent to reflect, share, and strategize on what it truly takes to make work for all.

From our presentations on workforce integration and task-shifting to our innovations in geospatial microplanning, health financing, and community-driven education - we see that primary health care, at its best, is built to listen, adapt, and respond. Our work in Nigeria shows that when communities are adequately equipped, PHC becomes a driver for equity and resilience.

reminded us that collaboration is not optional, because we need stronger partnerships across sectors, solutions grounded in both data and dignity, and a shift from pilots to proven, scalable, and sustainable models.

Pathfinder is proud to be part a movement that is delivering coverage, and ensuring continuity, quality, and care.

Niger continues to experience severe land and natural resource degradation, which has a significant impact on , the resilience of agricultural production systems, economic infrastructure, and other means of household subsistence. particularly increases women’s vulnerability to economic and health shocks. Seasonal migration by young people from rural to urban areas is one consequence of climate change.

The Tangamo Project (“Resistance” in Zarma) is a model developed by Pathfinder to build women’s resilience to the effects of climate change. The Tangamo project was initiated to deploy an integrated community health and income-generation approach to improve the quality of life of young women and girls who are migrants or affected by the migration of their partners.

Read our new technical brief to learn more about how the Tangamo Project successfully built economic and health resilience among young women impacted by seasonal migration, while simultaneously improving knowledge of , , and among project participants.

Next week, our Dr. Amina Aminu Dorayi and Ouma Onyango will be representing Pathfinder at the Africa Health Business Symposium in Abuja, Nigeria.

We're joining the session "Addressing the Effects of Climate Change on Health" to share how women-led solutions are building climate-resilient health systems across Africa.

Our evidence from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, Tanzania and other countries shows that when women lead climate-health interventions, entire communities become more resilient.

Excited to showcase how we are investing in women-led innovations that deliver measurable impact across health, climate, and economic empowerment.

We know that when women and girls have equitable access to health, education, and economic opportunities, they become powerful agents of change, transforming their own lives and those of their families and communities.

We're thrilled to share insights from our Impacto program in Mozambique, where we've seen this truth in action! This initiative turned adolescent girls and young women into change-agents by enabling them to exercise their bodily autonomy and have a voice in decision-making.

Supported by Global Affairs Canada, the program in Tete and Manica provinces reached almost 2 million people. A key focus was addressing harmful practices and beliefs that limit control over their bodies and lives.

A remarkable achievement? Their representation on local leadership councils. At the program's start, no young women were represented. By the end, they were included on nearly all of them. As one young woman from Tete shared, "During these meetings, leaders listen to and respect our opinions, even when there are heated debates."

By fostering power from within, these young women developed increased confidence, self-worth, and a strong recognition of the value and legitimacy of their opinions.

This is what progress toward gender equality looks like! The work shows so much promise we are rolling out on a second phase of the program now.

Cervical cancer should not be a death sentence—not when there is a vaccine that can prevent it. However, in many communities across , Nigeria, myths, misinformation, and limited awareness still prevent adolescent girls from receiving protection they deserve.

To address these barriers to care, Pathfinder Nigeria, in partnership with the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board and the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, brought together Ward Development Committee chairmen and religious leaders from all 44 local government areas of Kano State. Together, community leaders were equipped with accurate, culturally appropriate information about , , and the safety and importance of the HPV vaccine.

This proved to be no ordinary training. It was an act of trust-building, one that placed faith leaders and grassroots actors at the center of cervical cancer prevention.

See why:

“This topic touches me deeply, as I lost my wife to cervical cancer. That painful experience has shown me how serious and real this issue is. I will use my

This World Environment Day, and every day, we call for health programs to be designed with the growing impacts of climate change in mind. Evidence-based predictions tell us that we need to act swiftly—and sustainably—to prevent worst-case scenarios for our health.

By 2050, we could see...

📈 Up to 15.6 million deaths caused by climate change, with the majority occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia (World Bank)

📈 A 370% increase in annual heat-related deaths (Lancet Countdown)

📉 Up to $15.4 trillion in losses in low- and middle-income countries (World Bank)

Investing in climate resilience also pays dividends. Every $1 spent on adaptation yields a 2- to 10-fold return (Global Commission on Adaptation).

At Pathfinder, we work primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia—the epicenter of this crisis—and place women and girls—whose livelihoods, health, and safety are disproportionately at risk—at the center of all we do.

We are moving swiftly to engage communities and countries on the frontlines of the climate crisis to drive innovative climate-health adaptation solutions.

On World Environment Day, we’re sharing some of the community-led and women-led solutions we’ve supported with our partners to improve health outcomes, mitigate economic losses, and improve gender equality in places most vulnerable to climate disasters.

Now, we must find new ways to finance the widespread scale-up of the most effective solutions!

Last week, in celebration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, Pathfinder Nigeria, in collaboration with Al-Masaareef Foundation, engaged adolescent girls from three key communities—Kuje, Lugbe, and Karonmajigi—in Abuja. The outreach focused on delivering vital information about menstrual hygiene management, distributing sanitary pads, and facilitating open, stigma-breaking conversations around menstruation.

Both in-school and out-of-school girls participated in the sessions, where they learned not only how to manage their periods safely and hygienically but also about the critical role of nutrition. The team emphasized the importance of consuming iron-rich foods such as leafy greens, fruits, beans, and eggs to help replenish lost blood and maintain energy during menstruation.

At Pathfinder, we believe that no girl should be held back by her period. Together with our partners and communities, we are building a future where periods are normal, supported, and never a source of shame.
