Meeting Grief a New Way: Using Yoga, Mindfulness, and Self-Compassion to Navigate Any Loss
🪷 Led by Tracy Affonso & Katie Stockman
📅 Saturday, March 7 from 1pm - 4pm

Loss is universal. Friends move, children grow up, careers change, medical diagnoses come, loved ones die. We rarely allow ourselves to acknowledge the pain associated with these losses, yet it lives in our bodies and hearts.

This 3-hour retreat will gently hold us as we come together to honor our losses and start to move through grief — any type of grief.

We will use yoga, guided meditation, journaling, and facilitated conversation to create a community experience where grief — new or old — is accepted and nurtured so we can start to heal, integrate the pain, and welcome the wisdom and love learned only through loss.

The workshop will be led by Tracy Affonso and Katie Stockman. Tracy brings years of deep care for the Artemis community to curating gentle flows and restorative practices for this workshop. Katie, a nurse practitioner, therapist, and Mindful Self-Compassion teacher, will lend her expertise – and personal experience with grief – to creating an experience that centers love, connection, and self-care.

Pricing: $75 (unlimited monthly members receive 10% off)

✨ What inspires you to teach?
I teach yoga because I found that I have used the practice to fulfill my needs as I have evolved over time. When I first started I used yoga as an exercise & it helped tremendously to maintain a healthy weight & feel strong. As time went on I felt more strongly about being flexible & I found that in the different modalities of yoga that exist. During the pandemic I relied heavily on breathwork & yoga nidra as I needed to reset my central nervous system to a more stable place. Yoga is a science of how to live life well & healthy & has practices that resonate with everyone at every walk of life & it is my greatest pleasure to help people see that for themselves.

✨ Is there a mantra or philosophy that resonates with you?
"Atha yoga-anushasanam" which means "Now, the practice of yoga begins" is a mantra I remind myself every day. I once had a teacher repeat that mantra with every sun salutation & it is the only practice I can remember from that year because it was so impactful. In my 12 years of knowing yoga, I have had periods where I practice less or my practice is lighter & it is so uplifting knowing that I am gently invited back to the practice in a non judgmental way.

✨ What's your favorite yoga pose?
Oh gosh, there are so many postures that I love. On a day to day basis, trikonasana or triangle pose is my favorite pose to hit in practice because my chest feels & my breath feel so expansive. On a fiery day, I feel good on top of the world when I can throw my legs up in Ganda Bherundasana, known as chin stand or also formidable pose.

✨ If I only have 5 minutes to practice, what poses do you recommend?
Downward facing dog for four minutes and a forward fold for one. This is my go-to when I feel like I have been sitting & reading (or gaming) for a long time.

✨ Yoga book recommendations?
Yamas and Niyamas by Deborah Adele is one of my favorite books on philosophy ever written. The author breaks down the nuances of yogic philosophy in a very relatable way for our modern age. I often read from this book when I teach restorative classes.

✨ How do you like to spend time outside of the studio?
Outside of the studio I am big into nature, walking or hiking with my pup Sebastian. I like tennis, museums, movies in the cinema, Ru Pauls Drag Race, legos, videogames, jigsaw puzzles, reading in languages that are newer to me (I'm learning French right now), hosting dinner for friends & travel!

Explore being with breath awareness – 5-week Pranayama Series with Rahel Wasserfall
Saturdays, February 28 through March 28
8:00am - 8:50am
IN STUDIO & ONLINE

Pranayama is the entry way to a meditative practice and the best tool we have to quiet our nervous system. It's the art of becoming sensitive and aware of the incoming and outgoing flow, and the natural pauses of the breath in the body.

What will you learn in this series?
✨ Different pranayama (breathwork) techniques
✨ Internal focus: Savasana or lying down positions becoming aware of the effect of the breath on different parts of the body through the chakra system.
✨ Awareness of the shape of the breath in different postures.
✨ Breath as a cleaning internal agent, as a quieting or uplifting agent and as the doorway to prathyahara. BKS says that pratyahara is the ability to re-experience what beginnings are, transforming in a way, from a bloom to a bud and not only from a bud to a bloom.

This series is geared toward regular members of Artemis community interested in energy work with at least one year of asana practice in any lineage. Please commit to all 5 classes in this series. The regularity of the practice is what creates the magic in pranayama.

ABOUT KELLY:
Kelly has been teaching yoga since 2010, after practicing for 5 years and always wanting to delve deeper into the practice. She loved that it was more than just a workout, and how every class could be different. She completed her 200-hour teacher training with Ana Forrest, and took a 32-hour adjustment training with Sue Jones. She has also studied with Ame Wren and David Regelin to further her teaching practice.

She is inspired to give students a practice that both challenges them physically and allows them a respite from our busy modern lives. Kelly's teaching is a vinyasa style, linking breath and movement with compassionate cueing and assists.

Meet Alison! She teaches Flow, Flow Fundamentals, and Restorative. We're so grateful to have her on our teaching team and in our yoga community!

✨ What inspires you to teach yoga?
I teach first and foremost to share my love of yoga. I love that it exercises and nourishes both body and mind, so everyone can get something out of the practice. Also personally teaching is my creative outlet. It constantly challenges me and teaches me new things.

✨ Is there a mantra or philosophy that resonates with you?
This year I'm inspired by the concept of Mudita, or sympathetic joy. While yoga can be very independent and we try to practice non-comparison, I love the communal energy of practicing in a studio, so as a teacher I strive to share in the small triumphs and satisfaction of others.

✨ What is your favorite yoga pose?
It's so hard to pick! Lately I love humble warrior and dolphin pose. I also tend to like deep twisty balances like revolved side angle or revolved hand to big toe.

✨ If I only have 5 minutes to practice, what poses would you recommend?
Simple cat cows, thread the needle prep to open the chest, and a sun salutation with some side bends thrown in.

✨How do you like to spend time outside of the studio?
Reading, drinking tea, reading about tea, watching movies (I always have a list of more I need to see!) and spending time with family or my cat Sandy.
