New blog from Artemis Yoga owner & founder Liz Padula!

The month of October is known for many important traditions and recently I learned that the well-known Breast Cancer Awareness Month is now Breast Cancer Action Month. I like this change to highlight not only Awareness but also what can we do to bring Action to one of the most common forms of cancer for women.

You see, I am a breast cancer thriver/survivor two times and while it took me a while to get comfortable sharing my story, I’ve learned that sharing helps others feel less alone and that’s what this month is really about. So my Action is sharing an essay that I wrote for a new book called PAVING Your Path Through Breast Cancer and Beyond – Healthy Learning.

Before you start reading, if you haven’t got your mammogram, do it – schedule it. Remind a loved one. Mammograms saved my life, twice. Don’t be afraid do it, just take the step and if you’re scared, I’ll go with you.

In this adapted reflection, I share how breast cancer and yoga changed the trajectory of my career and my life. Yoga has always a part of me, as a young girl when I learned to meditate from my older sister, as an athlete and when working in the corporate world. But it was breast cancer that became a catalyst to turn my passion for yoga into a purpose: opening my own business, Artemis Yoga.

The first Artemis Yoga class was on December 5, 2015. Pretty quickly, especially with the January resolutions, we started having a regular crew of yogis. While there were certainly slow days when classes were just a handful of students, I never cancelled a class, even if one person came. I felt that person made the time in their day to choose to do yoga with us so we would teach. With an intentional tagline of Welcome. Learn. Practice., I had a perspective that Artemis Yoga would always be welcoming and ready for any student who walked in our door and wanted to practice yoga.

✨ What is Iyengar Yoga?

Based on the teachings of BKS Iyengar, Iyengar Yoga takes a pose-by-pose approach to classical yoga so you can build on your individual progress as you gain strength and increase flexibility. Iyengar Yoga seeks to align the body, mind and breath while using props to make yoga accessible to all.

✨ How does Iyengar Yoga differ from Flow?

In general, you will find the poses in Iyengar classes to be familiar but the structure and sequencing to be different. You may find that poses are held longer and explored with a variety of props more than in other yoga methods. In Flow, you will generally move fluidly from pose to pose with sun salutations as a regular component. Iyengar classes are also known for teaching inversions in an accessible and safe manner, for example the use of blankets to support the neck in a shoulderstand.

And yet these distinctions are not always so black and white and many of our flow-trained teachers at Artemis Yoga have studied the Iyengar method or trained with Iyengar instructors for many years and thus their own teaching is influenced by the method as well.

✨ Should I take Iyengar along with other types of yoga?

Yes! Students find that Iyengar classes inform their Flow and Restorative practices.

Just like any other activity, some days you might want to read non-fiction and focus on a topic and other days you may find you like to immerse yourself in a good juicy novel. Both are good for the soul. Or for those who enjoy different forms of exercise, you could think of your Iyengar class as a day that you work with a trainer on body mechanics and strength building and the flow class as a day you work on cardio with a meditative type of pace.

✨ Who should take Iyengar Yoga classes?

Everyone! We offer Iyengar Yoga for all abilities: Fundamentals, General, and Experienced, as well as a specialty Rope Wall class. Often people with injury enjoy the personal attention and adjustments of Iyengar trained instruction but anyone can join an Iyengar class to learn and practice.

We welcome you to come on in and see for yourself!

At Artemis Yoga, our teachers and staff are lifelong learners! This fall, our amazing team has been sharing their skills and best practices with one another through a special series of professional development workshops as part of our 10th anniversary season. 🎉📝

It’s been impressive to see the genuine interaction and deep respect our teachers and staff have for one another. The expertise we have within the Artemis Yoga teaching community is incredible and it has been such a gift to be a part of this unique collaboration.

Often as yoga teachers, we don’t have the chance to connect and brainstorm about teaching scenarios, so this series of workshops has been a wonderful way to learn from and with our talented colleagues right here at Artemis!

So far, we’ve explored topics like Reading the Energy in the Room with Alex Amorosi, Working with Prenatal Students with Stacey Jackson Flammia, and Supporting Beginners with Liz Gawel.

We’ll be continuing throughout the fall and winter with more inspiring sessions led by Einat Peled-Katz, Lisa Scialla, JoAnne Kazis, and Jarvis Chen.

✨ We’re so grateful for this dedicated team and the spirit of teamwork and connection that has made Artemis Yoga such a special place over the past 10 years. It’s this shared commitment to learning and one another that makes our community thrive.

✨ Allowing the Unfolding: Yoga and Aging

The challenges and processes of aging have been the focus of a committed group of Senior Iyengar Yoga teachers. In this short essay, I am grappling with our communal learning. I am grateful to stand at the feet of my dear teachers: Karin Stephan, Patricia Walden, Eyal Shifroni, Peentz Dubble, Roni Brissette and David Goldblatt.

Exploring the means to maintain strength and foster resilience as our bodies age, we learn to be bold as well as cautious in our approach to our practice. Dwelling on the many facets of BKS Iyengar’s legacy of prop usage help us maintain an active practice for as long as possible. Yoga practiced intelligently moves through the body’s resistance and helps us avoid injuries.

Fostering strength is yet only one aspect of facing our aging, sensitivity to the body we have in each practice becomes as well central as frailty sets in. Strength, we soon learn is not enough in our unfolding. We also need tools to shift perspective and move away from a mind of grasping the poses, of wanting to achieve more.

Our younger selves might have wanted to do more and more but such a mind in an older body creates suffering. As abilities change, moving away from grasping the poses is essential. We need to shift our approach and discover a mind that uses yoga to find our purpose.

Why is it that we practice? And what is it that we practice?
