1.15.24
We scattered you today
Into the salty sea
Where oft you surfed and sailed
Forever now you'll be
It wasn't really "you" though
Just bits of bones and ash
You were, you are, will always be
Oh so much more than that
You were more like the sea itself
Like the wild and windswept waves
And we all are, aren't we? So much more
Than what ends up in our graves
We're the fire that burns inside us
Our hearts, our souls, our minds
And, perhaps most of all,
We're the imprints left
On those we leave behind

I've had it in my heart since October to share a summary of the wonderful last days we had together before Joe was unable to leave the house.
* On Wednesday 10/18, Debbie Larkin took Joe to sail on The Salty Sheep for the last time while I stayed home and worked on the front garden with help from friends and neighbors (creating a Surrboards & Succulents Memory Garden).
* On Friday 10/20, Ron & Susie came for dinner, and then Ron accompanied us to Monte Vista Christian High School's Homecoming Football Game
* On Saturday 10/21, we attended the Christian Surfers 831 Vision Casting Night
* On Sunday 10/22, we went to hear the Santa Cruz Symphony after church, and then to Visiting Hours at Allen & Heidi Barnes' Home
* On Monday, we reenacted our wedding at 1440 Multiversity's Sanctuary, which was Bethany Bible College's Craig Chapel when we were married there on July 24, 1982. We enjoyed lunch afterwards at Faultline Brewery
That night, Kirk drove Joe home and put him to bed, and he didn't leave the house again after that. I realized that God had sustained him and he had sustained himself so that we could enjoy that special day and last amazing memory!
* On Tuesday, 10/24, I adopted a beautiful 5-year-old pit bull from the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter! Her name is Ruby Sunshine. She has been such a blessing to me since Joe's passing.
* On Friday, 10/27 we had our last visiting hours at the home of Dan & Lynn Wagner. Sadly, Joe was unable to attend, but I did.
We were so blessed to have so many wonderful times with family and friends throughout this challenging time, and to build memories together that we will all cherish!

We are back from Chile! 🇨🇱

Joy and her husband Avi, Silas, Lisa, and I want to thank all of you who generously contributed toward our amazing trip. We accomplished all of my intentions and more. These were my intentions:
to reconnect with friends
to see the fruits of our years living in Chile
to enjoy the unique language and culture (food! 🍒 )
to grow closer and bond as a family and build memories
to have fun!
to process our grief
to have a Celebracion de Vida (Celebration of Life) for Joseph with some of those who loved him in Chile and to leave a bit of him there permanently by scattering some of his ashes in the Pacific Ocean in Pichilemu

I am so proud of each of my "kids". They really stepped up using their Spanish the whole time, and Avi made a Herculean effort to learn. They relaxed, accepted and returned the Chilean warmth (think hugs and kisses on the cheek), and they watched out for their mom & all her stuff 🥰. It was such a pleasure being with them for 10 days. We left on Saturday, Dec. 2 and returned to SF on Monday, December 11, visiting Santiago, Rancagua, and Pichilemu.

I hope I will have time to share more details & photos with you sometime soon!

In appreciation!

The "Fabulous Five" (Tammy, Joy & her husband Avi, Silas and Asa) are heading to Chile on Saturday, December 1! We will have another Celebration of Life on Saturday, December 9 (Joe's birthday - would have turned 63) at Pura Vida, the Youth With A Mission base in Pichilemu.
In the photo we had just finished sailing on The Salty Sheep on November 4th. This was a "Bucket List" activity that Joe had to attend in spirit. We were also celebrating Tammy's 11/7 birthday. Joy & Avi's dog Leela, and Tammy's dog Ruby Sunshine (adopted on October 24) sailed also.

FINAL REMINDER: The Celebration of Life of Joe is tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at 7pm. Please do NOT wear black, as this was a written wish of Joe’s.
Rain is expected, and the venue is about 200 yards from the parking, so you may want to bring an umbrella.
An event parking map and link to Livestream (on YouTube) has been added to the following informational page: https://tinyurl.com/CelebrateJoeM ...where you will find:
- Details for the Celebration of Life: RSVP (required), address, attire (no black), parking guidance, campus map, livestream link, Google Photo album link
- Memory Board link
- Guidance on gifts, contributions, donations
- How to provide a meal for the family
