Admit it. If you are not a germaphobe then you probably thought people who were germaphobes are a bit weird. A person who is constantly cleaning, washing their hands, carries a bottle of Purell everywhere they go, wipes down every chair before sitting down, opens doors with their elbow, etc. If you are a germaphobe or as some label it, a clean freak, you’re not alone. People who are overly preoccupied with cleanliness and hygiene are becoming increasingly common especially in the workplace with the rise of global pandemics. Hand sanitizer dispensers are everywhere. They have become a fixture in every American home and office. As the CDC relaxes its grip on post-inoculation Covid, should we stop the hand sanitizer madness? Research yields lots of contradicting arguments, however this writer votes to continue the madness.

For those of you careful individuals who have not contracted Covid, have you also noticed that you have not contracted any virus including the common cold? Wearing masks, washing hands and pumping hand sanitizer has somehow worked.

The Covid virus exists in molecules protected by a layer of fat or oil. Soap and Hand Sanitizer break into that fat shell and destroy the virus. Each takes about 20 seconds (two happy birthdays sung out loud) to do its job.

Comparing the two – hand washing is always deemed superior to Hand Sanitizer...

What is the new normal? Full-time workers dropping in to the office. Companies now offer a range of flexible hours or even fully remote work. For decades, working in an office full-time has been the norm, but this new normal of working remotely and making random in-office visits could be here to stay.

At LACOSTA, we must carefully adjust to workers coming into the office irregularly, at odd hours of the night, or for spur-of-the-moment meetings. For employers, the new vs the old model is a judgment call based on certain pros and cons.

You used to be called a “germaphobe” if you took extra precautions to avoid contact with other people and things. But COVID turned us all into germaphobes and wasn’t it pleasant for many of us to not only avoid COVID, but also to avoid bouts with colds and flu.

If you’re like most people, you open doors every day – at work, at home, at stores and restaurants and everywhere in between. Doorknobs are convenient, but they can transmit diseases and viruses. More than half of all respiratory illnesses are caused by touching doorknobs or faucets with unwashed hands or getting that contact on your mouth or nose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The flu virus can live on doorknobs for 24 hours and infect anyone who touches it, according to the CDC.
