When we look at a plant, what do we see? In the tradition of Thai Medicine, we see more than just a leaf or a root. We see a distinct personality—a set of characteristics.
Does this herb cool a fever? Does it dispel congestion or move stagnant blood? Does it warm the digestion or cool it? Each substance has a unique taste and property, and understanding these characteristics is key. The real magic of this medicine lies in the combination. In a single formula, herbs do not work in isolation. They are blended with intention—some herbs act as the “leader” to target the root of the illness, while others act as assistants to guide the medicine or protect the body. They combine to create a synergistic effect that is gentler and more powerful than any single plant alone.
How do we know which substances work together? How do we measure, prepare, and compound these formulas to restore balance?
Join us for a four-day introductory exploration of Thai Pharmacology.
We will be introduced to the four core sections of this pillar of Thai Medicine: the substances themselves, their properties based on taste, their classifications, and compounding them into formulas.
This is a hands-on class where we will be preparing and making medicines together. It is a beautiful starting point for anyone new to the tradition, and a deep dive for current students.
