Major Areas of the Brain & What They Control
When people hear “brain injury,” they often don’t realize how specific the effects can be. Every region of the brain has its own responsibilities, and damage in one area can create very different symptoms from another.
Here’s a straightforward overview:
Frontal Lobe
• Decision-making
• Problem-solving
• Emotions & behavior regulation
• Speech production
• Planning, focus, and impulse control
• Motor control (movement)
Parietal Lobe
• Sensory processing (touch, temperature, pain)
• Spatial awareness
• Coordination
• Understanding where your body is in space
Temporal Lobe
• Memory formation
• Language understanding
• Hearing
• Emotional processing
• Behavior and impulse changes
Occipital Lobe
• Vision
• Visual processing
• Depth and color interpretation
Brainstem
• Breathing
• Heart rate and blood pressure
• Sleep cycles
• Swallowing
• Basic survival functions
Cerebellum
• Balance
• Coordination
• Fine motor control
• Posture
TBI symptoms aren’t “random.” They usually align with the area of the brain that was injured. Understanding the roles of each region can help families make sense of the changes they’re seeing — and validate what the injured person is experiencing.
Knowledge helps remove stigma. Awareness helps people feel supported.
