On Monday, May 18th, Dr. Frazer will be giving a lecture about the Visual Consequences of Brain Injury at the 2026 Wisconsin Brain Injury Conference in Pewaukee, WI. This educational event brings together rehab professionals and brain injury survivors, families, and advocates to learn how to better serve and advocate for the needs of these patients who often suffer from "silent" disabilities. Professional Continuing Education credits are available for this and other lectures via the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Amblyopia (lazy eye) happens when one eye isn’t used as strongly as the other—even if it looks perfectly healthy. Over time, the brain may rely on the stronger eye, which can affect vision, depth perception, and learning.

**🚩 Signs to watch for:**
• Squinting or closing one eye
• Eye turn (in or out)
• Trouble reading or focusing
• Clumsiness or poor depth perception
• Headaches or eye strain

Kids don’t always say “I can’t see”—they may avoid reading or seem inattentive instead.

**⏰ Early detection matters.**
The sooner amblyopia is identified, the better the chance to support healthy visual development.

**👓 Treatment options may include:**
• Prescription lenses
• Vision therapy to improve eye teaming + brain connection
• Specialty lenses (like Shaw lenses) to balance vision between eyes

**✨ The goal:** Help both eyes work together for clearer, more comfortable vision.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it may be time for a comprehensive vision evaluation.

Why Your Child Loses Their Place When Reading?
Children losing their Place When Reading is a concern many parents face, especially when a child is clearly bright but struggles with reading, attention, or school performance.
Many families are told everything is normal because their child has 20/20 vision. However, vision is more than just clarity. It includes how the eyes work together, how they move, and how the brain processes visual information.
When these visual skills are not functioning efficiently, children may experience frustration, fatigue, and avoidance behaviors. These struggles often show up during reading, homework, or sustained near tasks.
Parents may notice signs such as losing place while reading, skipping lines, headaches, or difficulty concentrating. These are not simply habits or motivation issues—they are often indicators of a functional vision problem.
Unfortunately, these issues are frequently missed in routine eye exams and school screenings, which primarily assess distance vision. As a result, many children go undiagnosed and unsupported.
A functional vision evaluation looks deeper into how the visual system performs during real-world tasks like reading and learning. This type of assessment can uncover the root cause of many academic struggles.
A functional vision exam includes areas not commonly tested in a regular eye exam including:
• Eye Tracking Skills: Ability to accurately move the eyes across
• Binocular Vision Dysfunction and Convergence Insufficiency a.k.a Eye Teaming Skills: Difficulty with coordinating the eyes together as a team or difficulty sustaining convergence for a long period of time
• Eye Focusing Skills: Ability to sustain clear vision at near
• Visual Processing: Ability to integrate and retain visual information. This can include visual and motor coordination (handwriting), visual memory (spelling and reading comprehension) and visualization (learning new material and comprehension).
Vision therapy is a proven, research-based approach that helps improve the connection between the eyes and brain. Through guided activities and exercises, children can strengthen visual skills and improve efficiency.
As visual function improves, many children experience better reading fluency, improved comprehension, increased attention, and greater confidence in school.
It is important to recognize that early intervention can make a significant difference. Addressing visual challenges sooner can prevent long-term academic frustration and help children reach their full potential.
If your child is struggling despite effort, it is worth considering whether vision may be part of the problem.
Identifying the root cause is the first step toward meaningful improvement. If you suspect your child may have a hidden vision issue, schedule a comprehensive functional vision evaluation with New Horizons Vision Therapy. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month
March is recognized nationwide as Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding of traumatic brain injury (TBI), concussion, and other acquired brain injuries. Millions of people each year experience brain injuries from falls, sports injuries, car accidents, and other trauma.

While many people are aware of symptoms such as headaches or memory problems, vision problems after concussion or brain injury are extremely common but often overlooked.

At New Horizons Vision Therapy Center, we frequently help patients experiencing post-concussion vision problems, dizziness, double vision, and reading difficulties that stem from changes in the brain’s visual processing system. 👀 Did you know up to 80% of learning is visual?

A child can have 20/20 eyesight and still struggle with visual skills needed for reading and learning.

Signs vision may be affecting learning include:

📚 Losing place while reading
✏️ Difficulty copying from the board
😣 Headaches or eye strain
📖 Avoiding reading or homework
🔎 Poor reading comprehension

Vision therapy can help strengthen the visual skills needed for comfortable reading, attention, and learning.

When a child struggles with attention, learning, or behavior, vision is not always the first thing parents think about. Most people assume that if a child can see clearly and passes a school vision screening, their vision is fine. However, vision is much more than just seeing clearly — it involves how the eyes and brain work together to make sense of what we see.
