I help support a group of families and caregivers who care for those with dementia.

The question today was “Mom is not wanting to eat or drink. She gets mad when we push foods on her. Her blood work was low. What foods would she like to increase her sodium?”

My offerings…

It’s so challenging navigating this road. My dad too has this illness and lives with me and my family. I am a geriatric RN and a hospice nurse.
Our bodies tell us what we need. When we are thirsty we drink and same for hunger. What gets challenging is we (family, caregivers and even some medical professionals) are so trained to feed and drink. It’s a big part of our culture.
If we feed our loved ones-push them to eat and drink that risk for choking increases, aspiration pneumonia etc. And as you shared, she gets mad at those pushing.
We always give dad food and drink. If he eats it- great. If he doesn’t-it’s ok.
My dad and I had many conversations about this exact situation. Sadly, we have a strong prevalence of dementia in our family. Our goal is to always meet dad where he is at.

Falls. Falls are all too common in our older community. Last November, my dad had a serious fall resulting in fractures and a head injury.
When we came home from the hospital, he moved in with us that night. The risk for him to be alone due to advancing Alzheimer’s was too much. We put together a dream team of help and took a raw space to what is now called “The Dober Suite.”

As a geriatric nurse, specializing in dementia I have been able to help keep many people at home much longer than expected. I teach families how to care for those with dementia. I teach caregivers the same. Home care. It’s amazing. It’s what most people want. However, the reality is, supportive care at home is costly. My dad, who has Alzheimer’s type dementia lives with us.
For our 1 night get away cost over $500.
To say we treasure our respite time is an understatement.

This type of care is private pay, unless you are Medicaid eligible and meet criteria for certain programs.

It’s nothing for 24/7 care at home to run up the tab and cost thousands of dollars.
