We are proud to celebrate Aspirus Wausau Family Medicine residents Theodore Zamzow, DO and Dana Warwick, MD, who were recently recognized as MCW’s Outstanding Medical Student Teachers. 🌟 The MCW Curriculum and Evaluation Committee honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional teaching and help advance student learning throughout the academic year. Dr. Zamzow and Dr. Warwick exemplify this commitment through their dedication to mentoring and supporting future physicians.

We also want to highlight the hands on teaching happening in the program every day. Pictured here, Jerry Weiss, DO, is guiding a medical student through a procedure, and Samuel Staehling, MD, is teaching POCUS skills. 🔍🩺 Thank you to all our residents who make an impact through teaching.

❄️✨ Aspirus Wausau Family Medicine Residency Winter Retreat! ✨❄️

The residents took a well‑deserved break from busy clinic and rotation schedules to recharge, reconnect, and have some fun together at this year’s Winter Retreat!

The retreat kicked off at Wausau on Water (WOW) with great food, arcade games, and plenty of laughter before the group headed out for a local brewery tour to relax, learn about the craft, and enjoy time together outside the hospital.

Creating space for community, wellness, and connection is an important part of residency, and we love seeing our residents support one another both in and out of the clinic! 👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

🌟 Collaboration in Action Across WiNC! 🌟

During the past academic year, WiNC has focused on strengthening collaboration across our programs. One way we’ve advanced this effort is by aligning didactic learning times and hosting virtual, quarterly shared didactic sessions. These gatherings bring residents and fellows from all five programs together for meaningful, cross‑program learning.

Last week, we were joined by Angela Rust, Senior Counsel at Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, and Dr. Jennifer Michels of Rock Point Psychology LLC, who shared their expertise on The Law and Physicians and Wellbeing: Core Practices. The session also included thoughtful conversations around patient safety and quality improvement. ⚖️🩺

But collaboration doesn’t stop there! Our programs also partner through shared rotations. Dr. Alexander Burns, a PGY‑3 resident at the MCW–Prevea Green Bay Family Medicine Residency, recently completed an Emergency Medicine rotation with the Tamarack Health Emergency Medicine Fellowship in Ashland, WI. Dr. Patrick O'Flaherty, the Emergency Medicine fellow, and Dr. Burns even took some time outside the clinical setting to enjoy a hike at the beautiful Potato River Falls. 🌲👣

We love seeing our learners grow, connect, and support each other across the WiNC community! 💙✨

The MCW-Central Wisconsin Psychiatry Program came together to celebrate the holidays and the strong sense of community that makes this program so special. Our Institutional Coordinator, Julie, and our DIO, Dr. O’Connell, were able to join in on the fun. We are grateful for the residents, faculty, administrators, and community faculty for all they do to enhance psychiatry training and expand access to care throughout Central Wisconsin.

🍽 Wellness Wednesday at Aspirus Wausau Family Medicine Residency 🌱

The residents visited the Food + Farm Exploration Center and participated in a "quick cooking" class where they learned three delicious recipes including potato gnocchi!

After sharpening their culinary skills they explored the grounds and even took a moment to admire the world’s largest potato masher standing over 38 feet tall! 🥔🔍

Wellness events like this help the residents recharge while learning new skills and connecting with the community.

🍲 The Aspirus Wausau Family Medicine Residency program recently hosted a potluck featuring a friendly soup cook-off! 🍲

Our very own Julie Richards, Institutional Coordinator and Jami Kaiser, Director of the Center of Excellence & GME Leadership Academy, had the honor of judging the seven delicious entries.

✨ The coveted Golden Ladle was awarded to Kristin Whitaker, MD - community staffer and alumna of the program - for her outstanding butternut squash soup. ✨

We just wrapped up the first virtual session in the GME Leadership Academy Excellence in Medical Education series, following our in-person kickoff—and what a powerful start!

Dr. James Billings led us through the Science of Learning & Teaching and Facilitating Learning, exploring how to foster intentional, high-impact learning environments for our future physicians. From retrieval practice and adaptive learning to creating psychological safety and embracing humility in teaching—this session reminded us that great educators are always learning too.
