Deep Bench: Has the pandemic changed our self-esteem for better or worse?

My daughter said she wanted daddy to give her a braid so she could be like Elsa. After I pulled apart her hair in the three sections I knew a braid required, it was downhill from there...

Or so I thought? As I struggled with this task and felt frustrated with how it was looking (I had never done this before), my little one was giggling away, a smile beaming from her face.

She was enjoying this moment - a moment with her daddy. I’m focused on her, doing something for her, and I’m engaging with her. She couldn’t have been more content.

At the end, she reached back, felt the braid with her hand... I could tell she was thinking that it felt different from the way mommy does it, but she just looked at me with that big smile again and said, “Thanks, daddy!”

Kids are great at living mindfully and reminding us there’s no other moment more important than this moment.

I had just finished an interview with one of the local news stations talking about the importance of attending to ourselves as parents during this pandemic. It's so important and we need to MAKE time! Keep up the hard work, parents!!

Separation anxiety may be more prevalent than ever as our children are returning to the classroom after spending so much time at home. What can we do as parents?

I caught up with WSAW NewsChannel 7’s Kailin Schumacher to chat about it!

The number one thing parents should do when dealing with separation anxiety listen to their child.

Caught up with Holly Chilsen from WSAW NewsChannel 7 to discuss how parents can take care of themselves as we navigate this upcoming school year. I so appreciate our community influencers having these discussions!

Kids are not the only ones whose mental health is impacted by the uncertainty and stress of a new school year, but it also has a profound impact mentally on parents.

First, the incidents that occur regarding the abuse of power and racial injustice in any profession including Law Enforcement is inexcusable.

A discussion about the mental health of our police officers does not invalidate nor provide an excuse for any behavior that has occurred.

That said, I cannot imagine the mindset that is required when putting on a bulletproof vest to go to work each day. Last week, I spoke about the mental consequences of Law Enforcement with WSAW NewsChannel 7 along with the affects of trauma, fear, and stress on the brain.

As the United States continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s another deadly trend that has been on the minds of law enforcement officials for decades; police officer su***des.

Happy fathers day to all the dad’s who show up in their children’s lives. The way you treat your children, family and friends, yourself, and even strangers will have a major influence in the way your child does. Why? Because we are superheroes, of course. For our children, we can do no wrong and parents are the ultimate standard for all that is good and right in their eyes. It’s no wonder they’d want to model their lives after us! But that’s a lot of responsibility!

The good thing is that our children can be very forgiving of our mishaps, and it is what we say and do consistently that influences them the most. Today’s been a great day as I gave myself space to reflect on my past time with my dad and then reflect on my present time with my own kids. I especially want to wish a Happy Father’s Day to those who have lost either a father or child. God bless.

A second interview with WSAW NewsChannel 7 last week on this difficult but ever-important conversation.

Leaders and members of the black community have been vocal regarding the need for white voices to stand alongside their black neighbors, fighting for an end to injustice and racism in America, and throughout the world.

When Holly Chilsen of WSAW NewsChannel 7 contacted me today to discuss the topic of explaining racism to our children, I’ll admit, I hesitated for a while in responding. I worried, “What if I say the wrong thing and offend lots of people?” or “What can I really say as a white male that would contribute to this conversation?” After some time, thankfully, the thought came to me.. If I don’t participate in the discussion on combating racism, then I am part of the problem. How to talk with our children about racism starts with modeling for them equality, and to speak up if we notice people being treated unfairly... So here’s me speaking up. There’s SO much work to be done here.

Protests across the nation over the death of George Floyd are forcing parents to have some tough conversations about racism with their children. A local psychologist had advice about how parents can talk to their children about the topic.
