As firearm deer season opens across Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan, Aspirus Health reminds hunters to make safety a top priority, especially when it comes to tree stands.

“You’re much more likely to get injured from a fall than a gunshot wound,” says Michael Clark, MD, EMS Medical Director with Aspirus MedEvac.

Joseph Mulrooney, Recreation Warden with the Wisconsin DNR, adds, “Every year we have dozens of people falling out of trees, which is why we highly recommend staying connected to the tree with a tree strap.”

A stroke can happen to anyone, but certain factors increase risk, like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, atrial fibrillation, and age over 60.

Fawzi Hindi, MD, Aspirus Neurosurgeon, reminds everyone to watch for warning signs: sudden weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, or sudden vision changes.

Heidi Erl, Hospital Supervisor at Aspirus Medford Hospital, is helping the next generation recognize the signs of a stroke. During her visits to Holy Rosary School Medford, she teaches students to “BEFAST,” shares stories about families affected by stroke, and encourages kids to talk about what they learn at home.

As we recognize World Stroke Day on October 29, Heidi’s work is a reminder that awareness starts early and that education can make all the difference in saving lives.

With Halloween around the corner, candy is everywhere but remember; medications aren’t candy.

Kenneth Yuk, Aspirus Pharmacy Resident, reminds families to keep medicines out of reach and teach kids that medications are only for when they’re sick. Many medicines are small, colorful, or flavored, making them easy for children to mistake as treats.

After taking a dose, put medications back in their secure spot right away. One simple habit can prevent accidental poisonings and keep your family safe this Halloween.
