Dr. Pablo Abrego and medical assistant Sherrie Rupe are retiring from their clinic this week after caring for patients for 25 years. They've been a mainstay in the nephrology department, most recently at Marshfield Medical Center-Weston.

When asked what has kept them together for so long, they said “patience, similar personalities, humor, companionship and respect. We know what each other is thinking pertaining to patient care. We've also maintained close friendships with each other's families.”

Sherrie started with Marshfield Clinic in August of 1989. Dr. Abrego joined in April of 1999. He is retiring from his clinic-based practice but will stay on as a part time hospital-based nephrologist.

“We'll miss comforting patients when they are afraid of a new kidney disease diagnosis,” said Dr. Abrego and Sherrie. “It's also been rewarding being part of the kidney transplant process, before and after. Many patients would make a special trip back to our office to thank us for all of the help to regain their lives back.”

Both agree they've worked with some amazing colleagues in nephrology and other departments, and also enjoyed being part of projects to improve Marshfield Clinic. As they now begin new chapters, they're also reflecting on what they'll miss most about each other.

“The special sarcasm that we share,” Dr. Abrego and Sherrie noted. “It has gotten us through a lot of ups and downs, working together for many years. Arriving at work wearing the same-colored clothing, which always makes us laugh. But fortunately, our friendship will continue after retirement.”

Congrats Dr. Jeanette le Noir on receiving a Mentor Award!

The Division of Education recently recognized Dr. le Noir, a family medicine physician at Marshfield Medical Center-Weston, with the 2024 Mentor Award. Dr. le Noir and many others filled a critical role as a mentor for future health care providers at Marshfield Clinic during their medical education journeys.

The residency program at Marshfield Clinic has now graduated a total of 940 residents and 63 post-doctoral fellows since 1974. More than 100 of those graduates are caring for patients at Marshfield Clinic.

Thank you Kara Poole, R.N. for exemplifying compassionate health care!

Kara was recently presented with a DAISY Award at Marshfield Medical Center-Weston. Her nomination letter from a patient's family reads:

"I stayed with my 97-year-old mother in her room 24/7 for a hip surgery that she had. It is very hard to choose only one nurse, but Kara was above and beyond. She felt like part of my family. Even though she was busy, she tried to make time to listen to my memories and joy that my mom and I shared. She also listened to my hurt and sadness of putting her in comfort care and how I had to listen to my mom’s cries of pain.

She did everything possible to bring comfort to my mother and me. She provided emotional support when I needed it the most in my life and always asked if I needed anything. I was always happy when she was working because she explained things well and answered any questions I had.

She reinforced to me that I was a good, caring daughter when I had doubts. It is so stressful to make major decisions for your parents. Kara would bring calm and compassion to my soul and heart. She has a gift and anyone that has her as a nurse or a loved one is very fortunate."

There is a resurgence of measles cases and outbreaks in the United States. As of August 6, 2025, the CDC has confirmed 1,356 measles cases in 40 states, and experts point to declining MMR vaccination rates in some groups and communities as the cause.

Measles is very contagious, but preventable with a vaccine. Symptoms include rash, but can develop into bacterial pneumonia.

Congratulations to Todd Grawlen and thanks for all you do! Todd is a courtesy attendant at the Wausau Center, who received the following Shining Star Award nomination:

"If you have entered the Wausau Center at door one you would have more than likely encountered Todd Grawien. Todd is the face of the front door, even with his mask on you can see him smiling. He is the first person to help someone out of a car, get a wheelchair or ask you if you have COVID symptoms. He will direct you to your destination with a smile. Todd is described by patients as kind, friendly and knowledgeable, he will go out of his way to say hello to everyone. He knows many patients by first name and often patients will seek him out to push their wheelchair so they can visit on the way to their appointment. Recently a patient stopped at the clinic to give Todd a Christmas card. Thank you Todd for being patient-centered and for genuine care of every person that walks through the front door at Wausau Center."

Well wishes to Dr. Ivan Schaller, who has cared for Wausau community members for 35 years. Dr. Schaller is retiring soon from his internal medicine practice. When asked to reflect on his career, here's what he said:

“Even to this day, I am honored. I’ve been thanking my patients for the gift they have given me. They have trusted me with their health care and there is no higher honor.”
