Let’s talk “functional” 🗣🗣🗣

➡️What does functional mean?
💯Movement that stimulates activities you perform in everyday life. Aka training a movement not isolating a muscle, etc.

Mobilizing thoracic spine functionally is essential after facilitating motion there through isolated exercises.

‼️Training functionally teaches the thoracic spine to be mobile through functional ranges of motion that you use throughout your training or activities of daily living‼️

1️⃣Here we open the thoracic spine in all three planes of motion while strengthening posterior trunk muscles to maintain mobility achieved.

2️⃣We focus on mobilizing thoracic spine in the frontal plane while coupling hip and lumbar mobility.

Give these a go and let us know how they go👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽

HELLO👋🏽 QUAD STRENGTHENING⚡️

➡️Proper gait, going up/down steps, walking downhill? It all requires quadriceps strength.

➡️Testing your patients quads with an MMT can only take you so far. Repeat it with me — functional testing matters👏🏽

➡️The test becomes the treatment. Use this movements to test quadriceps strength then prescribe accordingly.

➡️Start with the first exercise and progress to single leg‼️

THOUGHTS❓🧠👇🏽

So often we see standing ER with elbow locked at our sides isolating external rotators. However, here you see a more functional version by opening up trunk and hips while still targeting external rotators but, it is more functional.

🧠Our body doesn’t move in isolation, so why treat our patients like that?

Next time you target shoulder ER try out this exercise‼️

‼️FUNCTIONAL SINGLE LEG DEADLIFT‼️

Here we see Ryan is performing a functional single leg deadlift facilitating single leg dynamic balance and addressing motion in both sagittal and transverse planes by rotating and opening up at the top of the motion.

The cable allows for added resistance at the shoulder to facilitate eccentric scapular control throughout external rotation at 90.

This exercise is perfect for any overhead athlete such as baseball, volleyball, etc. because it teaches both stability and mobility through the entire range of motion that is used during activity.

Early functional eccentric hamstring strengthening/stability ✅

Eccentric is a way to describe when a muscle is both activated and lengthened at the same time. During an eccentric contraction, the muscle will be challenged by an opposing force, such as a heavy weight or gravity.

Utilizing an anterior lunge with anterior hand reach is a great early hamstring rehab tool. Adding the forward hand reach recruits the hamstring to work eccentrically as it works to decelerate hip flexion and body mass. To truly make this exercise eccentric make sure your hip bends more than your knee. Working the hamstring muscle eccentrically in this way often results in less pain and more activation early on in rehab than what you may think of as more traditional hamstring exercises.

Reach in multi directions to recruit each of the 3 hamstring muscles‼️

Merry Christmas from all of our DPT Family! Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season! I’m truly blessed to get to have both a family at home and a family at work where we get to laugh, smile, and have fun all day. Thank you for continuing to bless my life each and every day. Also, special thanks to all the past patients who took the time to stop by the clinic. It truly made my day to get to see so many familiar faces. Thank you for all being part of my family and bringing me joy this holiday season

Have you ever dealt with plantar fasciitis before? Chances are you have at some point because it is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries!

It is defined as inflammation of the planetary fascia tissue on the plantar surface (aka the bottom of your foot) due to repetitive micro trauma.

This can occur for numerous reasons — over pronation of the foot, limited hip mobility, or... limited flexibility of the gastroc-soleus complex which is what we will focus on in this video!

The gastroc-soleus complex directly attaches to the plantar fascia. So, if it is tight then it can put strain through it. It can also contribute to poor mechanics at the foot and ankle limiting dorsiflexion during gait.

Try these two simple exercises to eccentrically strengthen gastroc-soleus complex while simultaneously mobilizing at the ankles.

1️⃣ Anterior knee reaches — beginner phase
2️⃣ Single leg anterior knee reaches — advanced phase

Let us know if you try these out to help diminish your plantar fascia pain!

HAMSTRING STRAINS ‼️

Have you ever “tweaked” or “pulled” your hamstring before?

Strained or torn hamstrings are very common musculoskeletal injuries. And unfortunately re-injury rates are extremely high.

Strains or tears occur not because of the hamstring but, from another piece of the puzzle (i.e. hypomobile hips) not doing their job resulting in work overload on the hamstrings.

Here are 3 exercises that address hip and ankle mobility in all three planes of motion. These are great for acute rehab to start mobilizing problematic areas in the beginning stages of treatment.

1️⃣Frontal plane
2️⃣Sagittal plane — going into extension only initially to avoid irritating the hamstring further by going too deep into flexion.
3️⃣Transverse plane — rotating through lumbar spine, hips, knees, and ankles!
