DEADLINE APPROACHING! Helmet Hero coupons were distributed to 500 kids spotted making the safe choice of wearing their helmets during wheeled sports this summer. ❗If your kid(s) received a coupon, make sure you redeem their coupon for a FREE ice cream cone by 9/30/2025.❗ Huge thanks to our lead agency Aspirus Health and Briq's Soft Serve for sponsoring this initiative. Special thanks to our partners and local heroes at the Wausau Police Department and Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department for distributing the coupons to safe kids in our community.

Will your kids be walking to school this year? This weekend is a great time to review pedestrian safety and take a practice walk or two to/from school. More tips below!

Back-to-school season has arrived! (It felt fast to us, too.) If your kids are walking to school this year, please take a few minutes to cover some tips on how to stay safe. ⁠ ⁠

🚶It sounds elemental, but remind kids to always look left, right, and left again before crossing the street, and keep looking until they’re safely on the other side.⁠ ⁠

📵Teach kids to put phones, headphones, and devices down while crossing the street; it’s especially important to reinforce this message with teenagers.⁠ ⁠

🚸Use sidewalks or paths whenever possible and cross at street corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.⁠ ⁠

⬅️If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as you can.⁠ ⁠

🛑Kids younger than 10 should cross the street with an adult if at all possible. Most kids can’t judge the speed and distance of oncoming cars until that age.

Safe Kids Marathon County will be at the GRAND OPENING of Evergreen Elementary's Mountain Bike Park to check helmets for proper fit and safety (expiration date & damage). Free bike helmets available for those needing a helmet while supplies last. Helmets funded by Aspirus Wausau Hospital Volunteers.

Activities at the event include:
✅ Ribbon cutting
✅ First official ride on the course
✅ Training-wheel ride on the pavement for the littles
✅ Helmet fitting (& free helmets while supplies last!)
✅ Snacks & drinks
✅ Family-friendly fun
✅ Raffle prizes and giveaways
