Monthly Series: High-Functioning Anxiety
What is High-Functioning Anxiety?

High-functioning anxiety is not a medical diagnosis, but it is an increasingly common issue that’s being talked about by Forbes, US News & World Report, the Cleveland Clinic, and even the meditation app Headspace.

So, what is high-functioning anxiety?

On the outside, a person might appear to have it all together all the time:

✅ High-Achieving
✅ Perfectionistic
✅ Busy & In Control
✅ Meeting Deadlines
✅ Detail Oriented
✅ Organized & Productive
✅ People Pleasing
✅ Seemingly Confident

BUT….with high-functioning anxiety, the outward success comes at a cost of inner turmoil:

🤯 Constant Worry
🤯 Overthinking
🤯 Harshly Self-Critical
🤯 Restless & Irritable
🤯 Fear the Worst will Happen
🤯 Feeling Stressed
🤯 Overextended
🤯 Can’t say No
🤯 Mental & Physical Fatigue

Is it worth it??

Even though a little bit of anxiety can drive action and success, too much can take a toll on the body and mind.

That’s why people with high-functioning anxiety struggle not only with constant worry but also things like insomnia, muscle tension, racing heartbeat, exhaustion, and mood swings.

The thing about high-functioning anxiety is that it is very much an INNER struggle. Nobody would ever know on the outside, and the symptoms don’t meet the criteria for an anxiety diagnosis.

We’ll be following up with a series of posts to dive deeper into this idea of high-functioning anxiety. We’ll look at some underlying causes and some tips for easing the inner angst (while still staying productive and successful).

Smoke Alarm, Smoke Alarm!
Enough already!!
Low air quality caused by wildfires can have far-reaching health consequences.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), the US fire season is almost 80 days longer than in the 1970s. In some regions, particularly the western states, the fire season has expanded by as much as 105 days.

Beyond the immediate danger of the flames, the smoke and pollutants released during wildfires create low air quality that can have far-reaching health consequences.

Smoke generated by fires contains toxic substances, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and hazardous air pollutants. When inhaled, these pollutants can pe*****te deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, leading to a range of health issues:

Respiratory Issues:
The fine particles in wildfire smoke, known as PM2.5, can irritate the lungs, trigger
inflammation, and impair lung function. Prolonged exposure to PM2.5 can increase
the risk of respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, asthma exacerbation, and
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Cardiovascular Complications:
Chemical components in smoke can enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation,
oxidative stress, and blood clotting – leading to serious cardiovascular health issues,
particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.

Mental and Emotional Effects:
The impact of poor air quality and the heightened risk of wildfires can lead to
increased stress, anxiety, and poor sleep. Your liver becomes clogged and toxic, causing you to have more anger issues.

Other Health Issues:
In addition to respiratory and cardiovascular complications, low air quality caused
by wildfires can contribute to eye and throat irritation, headaches, fatigue, and
worsened allergies. It can also increase the susceptibility to respiratory infections
and worsen the symptoms of existing health conditions.

As your holistic healthcare professional, we can play a crucial role in helping
you navigate low air quality. Specifically, we are a great resource for recommending foods, nutrients, herbal products, and supplements that support respiratory and cardiovascular health during periods of poor air quality. We can also help you manage stress, promote healthy relaxation, and support the body’s systems for the healthy elimination of toxins. Food Spotlight: Cilantro

Cilantro comes from the same plant family as carrots, celery, and parsley. Some call it coriander. In the US, we refer to the leaves of the plant as cilantro and to the seeds as coriander.

🌿 So let’s talk about the leaves.

You may have heard that cilantro leaves support detoxification by binding to and eliminating heavy metals from the body. While this may be true, the evidence is not definitive. We can certainly include cilantro in cleansing diets but not rely on it to eliminate heavy metals on its own.

Like all green leafy foods, cilantro is a source of vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, potassium, and beta-carotene. These nutrients make it a powerhouse to support health!

Looking for ways to include more cilantro in your diet? Try these:

🌿 Cilantro Pesto
🌿 Sprinkle on Tacos
🌿 Sprinkle over Stir-Fries
🌿 Add to a Smoothie
🌿 Blend into Salad Dressing
🌿 Toss onto Salads

Supplement Spotlight: Curcumin
Quick question for you:
How often do you eat curry?
If your answer is anything less than EVERY DAY, then listen up.

Curry gets its deep orange color from turmeric—a spice in the ginger family used extensively in traditional Indian dishes. And the most bioactive compound in turmeric?

✨Curcumin✨

Curcumin may come from a traditional Indian spice, but thousands of scientific research articles over the years have explored the mechanisms of curcumin—and how it interacts with cellular and metabolic pathways in the human body.

Here are just 5 of the many known health benefits of curcumin:

1️⃣ Antioxidant Defense

Curcumin is most widely known for its antioxidant actions. Three key antioxidant enzymes in the human body (SOD, catalase, and glutathione) can all be boosted by curcumin—meaning it acts through several pathways to fight oxidative stress.

2️⃣ Inflammatory Pathways

Curcumin interacts with signaling molecules and cellular pathways to support a healthy inflammatory response. Some studies have found it to support healthy CRP levels, while others have found it helpful for individuals with inflammatory conditions.

3️⃣ Mood Support

Double-blind studies in humans suggest that curcumin supplementation may help to alleviate anxiety and be supportive for those with low mood.

4️⃣ Liver Detoxification

Through its antioxidant actions, curcumin can powerfully support liver detoxification function, with some studies suggesting it also supports healthy levels of liver enzymes.

5️⃣ Healthy Aging

Free radical damage and inflammation are central mechanisms in the process of aging, making curcumin a popular supplement for healthy aging.

For anybody who is interested in these benefits and not already eating curry every day, curcumin supplementation is an option.

⚠️ Just one caveat:

Not all curcumin supplements are the same! Curcumin is not well absorbed from the digestive tract on its own, so higher quality supplements combine it with additional compounds (like piperine or various lipids) to improve absorption.

Supplements can be incredibly beneficial to support health and wellness—as long as they are chosen carefully and sourced from reliable companies.

10 Environmentally Driven Health Concerns

Could your home, office, or products you use every day be making you sick?

More than 85,000 chemicals are known to be circulating in everyday products in the US alone—in cosmetics, clothing, furniture, electronics, cleaning products, construction materials, and more.

These chemicals have potential health effects that range from irritating the lungs to interacting with the immune system or disrupting hormones. Exposures to environmental chemicals can be drivers of many chronic health concerns:

✅ Headaches
✅ Breathing Struggles
✅ Bone Thinning
✅ Mood Changes
✅ Cognitive Difficulties
✅ Attention Problems
✅ Hormonal Imbalance
✅ Immune Dysregulation
✅ Blood Pressure Changes
✅ Difficulty Getting Pregnant

This is not to say that environmental exposures are ALWAYS to blame for these issues. Chronic illness is complex.

When we work with clients, our approach is to consider all possibilities. Through your story and testing, we unravel the root cause.

If we discover that environmental exposures are driving your health concerns, the first step is to eliminate the exposure (or minimize it as much as possible). Then we use targeted therapies to support your body in detoxification so that you can heal.

I’ll be sharing more information in upcoming posts to help you minimize your exposure to hidden toxins and support your body in everyday detoxification—because if you are currently healthy, the time to be proactive about staying that way is now. Looking to see what your underlying toxin could be responsible for driving your health in the wrong direction? Visit our website and schedule a discovery call!!

60-Minute Self-Care

If it’s not on the calendar, it probably won’t happen. Right?

✨ Especially when it comes to self-care.

That’s why I challenge you to put on your calendar a 60-minute self-care time block. I recommend Sunday, but you can choose whatever day works for you.

Block your 60 minutes and then do anything and everything that refills your cup. Things like…

🎨 Art Project
🌱 Gardening
🧘‍♀️ Meditation
🥗 Cooking
🎹 Listening to Music
📱 Calling a Friend
📒 Journaling
💕 Or simply doing nothing at all

The point is to shift your energy toward nurturing yourself so you can show up as that incredible and amazing person you want to be for everybody else.

Will you accept the challenge?

Posture Check

Quick check: are you slumping?

Poor posture impedes your circulation, compromises your muscles and joints, and can contribute to things like headaches, back pain, and other health issues over time.

Plus your posture influences everything about how you look and feel!

So let’s do a quick posture check here and now. Here are the steps if you are sitting:

✅ Adjust so your feet are flat on the floor
✅ Feel your sits bones touching the chair
✅ Draw in your abdomen to straighten your lower back
✅ Lift your shoulders up - back - and down so they settle in line over your hips
✅ Draw your chin back so that your neck is upright rather than jutting forward

You may discover in this process that your chair and desk are not at the right height to allow for good posture. Take that as a clue and figure out how you can adjust your workstation!

Now here are the steps if you are standing:

✅ Adjust so your feet so they are about hip-distance apart
✅ Shift your weight mainly to the balls of your feet
✅ Loosen your knees so they are not locked
✅ Tighten your abdomen
✅ Lift your shoulders up - back - and down so they settle above your hips
✅ Draw your chin back so that your neck is upright rather than jutting forward

If you think you have a tendency to ignore your posture throughout the day, set a reminder to do this simple posture check once an hour. Your body will thank you!

Questions about your posture, back, neck, joints, or something else? Book a consult so we can help!

May Monthly Series: Seasonal Allergies
8 tips to allergy-proof your home

Whether it’s seasonal sneezing or a year-round runny nose, it’s possible that your home could be making allergies worse!

Here are 10 tips to reduce allergens in your home and keep your living space healthy and clean:

1️⃣ Wash bedding.
Wash your bedding every week in hot water to keep dead skin cells and dust mites at bay. As an added precaution, you can get dust-mite proof covers for pillows and mattresses.

2️⃣Vacuum regularly.
If rugs and carpets can’t be replaced with other flooring, vacuum weekly with a HEPA filter to reduce dust.

3️⃣ Close windows.
Closing the windows and relying on air conditioning during pollen season or when there is bad air quality can keep your inside air fresh.

4️⃣Filter air.
Regularly replace the filters in your heating and air conditioning units and consider portable HEPA filter units around the house.

5️⃣ Wash pets.
Keep your pets clean or out of areas like the bedroom to minimize exposure to allergens in pet dander.

6️⃣Check ventilation.
Use a vented exhaust fan above the stove to clear cooking fumes. Use a fan in the bathroom when showering to minimize moisture accumulation.

7️⃣ Check humidity.
Mold can grow anywhere that humidity exceeds 50%. Keeping homes cool and dry minimizes the risk of mold growth and exposure.

8️⃣ Avoid smoke.
Don’t allow people to smoke in your home, avoid wood-burning fireplaces, and close the windows when there is wildfire smoke! All types of smoke can be respiratory irritants.

When it comes to improving our health, it’s easy to forget about the importance of our surroundings. Even if nobody in your family struggles with allergies, taking these steps can improve your odds of staying allergy-free!

Lack of sleep leads to belly fat.

More than ⅓ of adults in the US don’t get enough sleep, and it could be bad for the waistline.

📒 New research from Mayo Clinic shows that a lack of sleep combined with free access to food leads to higher calorie consumption and increased belly fat.

In the study, participants were allowed either 9 hours in bed to sleep or 4 hours. After just 2 weeks, even in young and relatively lean adults, shortened sleep led to:

➡️ 300+ extra calories consumed per day
➡️ a 9% increase in total belly fat
➡️ an 11% increase in abdominal visceral fat

Why does it matter that we specify “visceral fat?”

It’s because when a person gains weight, the excess fat can either deposit just under the skin (called subcutaneous fat) or around the internal organs (called visceral fat).

‼️ Visceral fat is the more dangerous type because it produces chemical messengers that disrupt metabolism, contribute to inflammation, and more.

In this study, the visceral fat was only detected by a CT scan and would’ve otherwise been missed. It shows that shortened sleep is wreaking havoc on the metabolism even if the effects are subtle.

🛏️ So next time you’re tempted to stay up into those wee hours doing whatever it is you think is fun to do….you might want to think again.

Your metabolism and waistline will thank you.
