✨ Meet Dr. Russell, one of our dedicated orthopaedic surgeons! ✨

Dr. Russell, shares, “As an orthopaedic surgeon, I don’t save lives; rather, I restore quality of life. I cannot imagine anything more rewarding than what I do for a living. I look forward to helping you live a more active and comfortable life!”

Outside of the clinic, you can find him waterskiing, gardening, hiking, snow skiing, and spending time with family. Fun fact - he and his son have even gone snow skiing in costume! ⛷️🎭

At PRO, Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT) share a common goal: helping you regain strength, mobility, and function so you can get back to the life you love.

While they often overlap, each has its own unique focus:

Occupational Therapy (OT):
- Helps you return to meaningful daily activities and tasks
- Focuses on hand-to-shoulder care
- Improves fine motor skills (like brushing teeth, crafting, or using tools)
- Creates custom-fit splints for the hand, wrist, and elbow
- Uses adaptive tools to reduce stress on your hands

Physical Therapy (PT):
- Improves full-body strength, movement, and physical function
- Focuses on large body movements
- Treats the legs, back, core, and neck

Shared Approaches:
- Treat shoulders
- Assess posture during work and activities
- Use ultrasound and electrical stimulation to reduce pain
- Provide home exercise programs
- Incorporate massage for recovery and pain relief

No matter your needs, our OT and PT teams work together to help you move better, feel stronger, and live fully.

Dr. Morgan joined our team on January 8, 2024. Raised in the Midwest, she’s excited to be back in the region and proud to serve the Wausau community after her years of service in the military.

When she’s not caring for patients, you can find her staying active, working with her hands, learning something new, or chasing her kids through the great outdoors!

We’re honored to have her on our team!

Fueling Your Body Before Surgery:

Did you know that what you eat before surgery can have a major impact on how well and how quickly you recover? A balanced, nutrient-rich diet supports faster healing, reduces complications, and strengthens your immune system.

Here’s what to focus on:
💧 Hydration: Aim for half your body weight in ounces of water daily
🍗 Protein: Supports wound healing and muscle strength (1.2–2.0g/kg of body weight)
🌾 Complex Carbs: Choose whole grains for steady energy and reduced inflammation
🥦 Fruits & Veggies: Packed with key vitamins and minerals that promote healing
⏳ Start Early: Nutritional planning may need to begin weeks or months ahead

Benefits of proper pre-op nutrition:
✅ Faster wound healing
✅ Lower risk of infection
✅ Stronger immune system
✅ Shorter recovery time and hospital stay

Good nutrition is one of the most powerful tools for a smoother surgical recovery!

Staying Safe in Extreme Heat:

As temperatures rise above 85°F, it’s important to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness. Here are some quick and effective ways to stay safe during extreme heat:

✅ Wear cool, light, and breathable clothing
💧 Keep a water bottle nearby and drink regularly
🚫 Avoid dehydrating drinks like soda, coffee, and other caffeinated beverages
🧃 Add electrolytes to your fluids, especially if you’re sweating
🌤️ Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late evening — avoid midday sun when it's strongest

Be alert for signs of heat exhaustion, which can come on quickly. Symptoms include:
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Headache
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid heart rate
- Pale skin
- Excessive sweating

If you experience these symptoms, stop activity immediately, move to a cool area, and hydrate.

Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, a life-threatening condition. Symptoms of heat stroke include:
- Confusion
- Slurred speech
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness
- Rapid heart rate
- Rapid breathing
- Seizures

If you suspect heat exhaustion or heat stroke, seek medical help immediately.

Stay safe, stay cool, and look out for others during these hot summer days!

Meet Dr. Murch! 👋

He’s been part of the OAW team since 2012 as a Hand and Upper Extremity Surgeon, specializing in surgery of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand.

Outside of the clinic, you'll find him cheering on his kids at their sporting events - or better yet, behind the wheel of the boat while they tube, kneeboard, wakeboard, water ski, and wake surf! 🚤🌊
