Medical lasers and energy-based devices are relatively under-utilized on patients with skin of color due to concerns regarding risk of pigmentary and other complications in Fitzpatrick skin phototypes IV-VI, but can be used safely and effectively to treat a range of dermatologic concerns in these patients. Careful selection of device type, settings, pre-and post-procedure precautions are key to optimizing outcomes, as we will cover in this session.

Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) is critical for protecting the epidermis during laser dermatologic procedures. The widely used cryogen, R134a, has a high global warming potential (GWP), motivating interest in environmentally favorable alternatives such as HFO-1234ze. This study evaluated whether HFO-1234ze provides epidermal protection comparable to R134a during laser exposure and investigated the mechanistic basis underlying any differences in cooling performance... This course will examine the fundamental aspects of laser tissue interactions. We will begin with basic concepts such as skin optics and the subsequent migration of light energy into the skin, the absorption of laser energy into the skin, and creation of heat. Then the field will be broken down into ablative and not ablative technologies, and finally visible light and near infrared technologies for pigmented and vascular lesions. The attendee should expect to, at the end of the course, have an appreciation for basic physical principles that guide laser procedures in cutaneous applications.

Despite expanding clinical use, healing dynamics following Laser-Coring have not been previously characterized with non-invasive skin imaging. Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) enables in vivo, real-time visualization of epidermal and dermal architecture with high resolution. Prior studies have demonstrated the utility of LC-OCT for characterizing skin microstructure remodeling after other energy-based device treatments. This proof-of-concept imaging demonstration utilized serial LC-OCT imaging after Laser-Coring to visualize keratinocyte behavior, nuclear morphology changes, stratum corneum reformation, and dermal remodeling over time... Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping aesthetic medicine from imaging and diagnosis to treatment planning, workflow efficiency, and safety monitoring. This session demystifies practical AI for lasers, energy-based devices, injectables, and body contouring. Faculty will translate core concepts into everyday clinical use. We will review evidence, real-world cases, and regulatory considerations.
