Big congratulations to the 2025 Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment (AHW) funding recipients — including several Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center investigators and partners!
Their projects are making a real impact: from developing smarter, more affordable cancer treatments to tackling disparities and improving outcomes in breast cancer, immunotherapy, and post-transplant care.
We’re proud to celebrate this important step toward a healthier, more equitable Wisconsin.
AHW-supported research plays a vital role in solving the most pressing public health challenges and shaping a healthier future for families across the state.

Join the Cancer Disparities Program for Research & Community Scholars — a free opportunity to explore how biology, lifestyle, environment, healthcare, and policy shape cancer outcomes in our communities.
Sessions are facilitated by Simona Johnson, BSN, MBA of PURE SYNERGY and Nikki Lytle, PhD of the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center.
The program runs September through May in a hybrid format (virtual & in-person) with bi-weekly sessions held on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:00 PM.

Meet Stella Dudek and Todd Wilcox, two incredible donors who turned their grief into action by organizing their own fundraisers for the last two years in support of the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center — all in honor of the late Jeff Dudek - beloved husband and friend.
Moved by the exceptional care Jeff received at MCW, they raised $45,000 over the last two years to give back and fuel hope for others facing cancer.
Their generosity is a powerful reminder that healing can take many forms and that one story can inspire real impact.
Haley Heaviland knows what it means to hear the words, “you have cancer.” She also knows how it feels to sit beside someone you love hearing them too.
Today, she helps drive lifesaving research as a Clinical Research Manager in the Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Trials Office—and now, she’s bringing that passion to Ride Audaxity. Haley and her 81-year-old father (a prostate cancer survivor) will ride together as part of Team Tumor-nators, all to fuel breakthroughs that change lives.
She’ll also be at the CTO rest stop on ride day—making sure every rider knows: the people behind the research are cheering you on.
The Every Day Counts study is reimagining what survivorship looks like for women with metastatic breast cancer.
In partnership with Loyola University Chicago the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center leads a 16-week lifestyle intervention pairing behavioral coaching, plant-based nutrition, and supervised exercise with biomarker tracking to study how lifestyle changes affect treatment tolerance and long-term outcomes.
🧠✨ Can artificial intelligence actually help researchers—and patients?
Yes! And Anai Kothari, MD, MS, an assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, is using AI to advance research.
In a recent Journal of the American Medical Association JAMA Network Open article, Dr. Kothari explains how AI tools can take on repetitive research tasks—like writing code or cleaning data—so researchers can focus on breakthrough ideas.💡
From matching patients to cancer clinical trials to predicting surgical complications, he’s leading efforts to use AI to solve real-world health problems—right here in Wisconsin.
Dr. Anai Kothari, an assistant professor at MCW who specializes in surgical oncology, is examining the power of AI to advance research. Newer AI tools can h...

The Health Griots and our Community Outreach & Engagement team have been active at local health fairs to raise awareness about men’s health.
The team shared presentations including Dr. Melinda Stolley’s “Cancer 101: Know More, Fear Less” and Dr, Katherine Hu’s “Cancer 101: Colorectal Cancer” — both designed to reduce fear with facts.

48% of cancer survivors in the United States have lived 10+ years since their diagnosis.
At the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, our researchers and clinicians are working every day to develop innovative therapies, improve outcomes, and turn survivorship into a reality for more people.
That’s how many people were excluded from a potentially lifesaving drug—based on outdated rules.
Now Tommy McFall, PhD, at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center is challenging established theories in oncology—advancing more precise, data-informed treatment strategies.
His research reveals that some patients previously excluded from therapies like Cetuximab, based on traditional genetic markers, may actually respond.
There are 623,405 people living with metastatic breast, prostate, lung, colorectal, or bladder cancer or metastatic melanoma in the United States, and that number is expected to increase to 693,452 by the end of the year.
At the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, our researchers and clinicians are working every day to develop innovative therapies, improve outcomes, and turn survivorship into a reality for more people.

Cancer touches everyone in our community, and for many, the impact is devastating. Research is the path to curing cancer, and cancer is the top strategic priority of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Our mission is to uncover the causes of cancer through scientific research, and to translate this knowledge into effective treatment of cancer patients. We are dedicated to reducing the cancer burden through innovative research into its causes, prevention, early detection and treatment. We do this by integrating basic science, translational and clinical research with over 200 ongoing clinical trials along with patient care and professional and community education, with an emphasis on reaching underserved populations.
We are a network of cancer experts, investigators, clinicians, research programs, equipment, facilities, and resources--an overarching organization that connects all cancer-related activities and represents the collective cancer effort at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
The Cancer Center is the virtual hub of cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin, providing leadership, knowledge, support and resources to cancer investigators and clinicians.
This integrated partnership is comprised of cancer research scientists and physicians at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, and the BloodCenter of Wisconsin. The Cancer Center is comprised of more than 200 physicians and scientists and is the only academic cancer center in Wisconsin’s most populous region. We support this unique population of more than 2.3 million people, many of whom are underserved.
The MCW Cancer Center is the only center of its type in Southeastern Wisconsin. We make a difference in the lives of cancer patients, now, and in the future. The MCW Cancer Center is devoted to translating research into patient care and into the community. The National Marrow Donor Program or ("Be the Match") has rated Froedtert & MCW a +1, which is the highest ranking possible and means that our patients live longer than expected. This also puts us in the top 5% nationally.
