Tuesday I had the privilege to visit our state capitol in Madison to educate music therapists about our efforts working towards licensure for music therapy in the state of Wisconsin, followed by meeting with our state senators and representatives to educate and advocate for this bill.

When someone claims to be a music therapist and is not fully trained as one, they are not equipped with the tools needed to pivot in the moment when a client needs it. This can induce harm on the clients in a serious way.

There are stories and examples of this: a baby turning blue without the appropriate intervention, a client who was sexually assaulted during a session by an employee who claimed to be a music therapist but wasn’t, and a school that allowed a choir teacher to provide music therapy for a student with it on his IEP, even though he didn’t have the training.

The number one reason for this licensure is to PROTECT THE CONSUMERS IN OUR STATE. So grateful to have Rep Barbara Dittrich as our champion to author this bill and help it get co-authored. Last Friday we had our annual summer gathering at Hott Park, whic has a beer garden called The Landing in Wauwatosa. It was a beautiful night of connecting, eating, drinking, and playing together with staff and their families! Unwinding time together like this is so important for our health and culture. Grateful we were able to get this time in before the crazy rain and floods over the weekend!
