The Telegraph Herald (Dubuque) interviewed Gina Blean, Speech Therapist and co-owner of Unified Therapy Services, about sudden Iowa Medicaid reimbursement changes that limit speech therapy coverage to just 15 minutes per session—an effective 66% cut that was implemented with little notice and no meaningful provider input.

This damaging decision directly impacts our clinic and the patients we serve. Children need time to regulate, engage, and practice skills to make real progress. Limiting care puts early intervention, access, and long-term outcomes at risk.

Recent Medicaid reimbursement cuts could significantly limit access to speech therapy across Iowa. KCRG recently visited our Dubuque pediatric clinic, speaking with our owners and a speech therapy patient to highlight how these changes affect real families.

These cuts threaten essential services for children who rely on speech therapy to thrive and for adults with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia. The devastating impact of these changes is being felt at our clinic and across Iowa at other rehab agencies who have been working tirelessly to pause the reimbursement change.
