WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY - SAFETY TIPS FOR OUR SENIORS & COMMUNITY
ANTICIPATED WINTER STORM THIS WEEKEND
Cold weather can be dangerous, especially for older adults. Please review and follow these safety tips to stay warm, safe, and connected during the upcoming winter weather.
STAY CONNECTED & PREPARED
Be sure phones are fully charged and keep a charger nearby at all times.
If you use a cell phone, consider a portable battery pack as backup.
Keep a list of important phone numbers (family, neighbors, medical providers) written down in case your phone is unavailable.
LIGHTING & POWER SAFETY
Know where your flashlights are and make sure they are easy to locate.
Check that batteries are fresh and keep extra batteries on hand.
Avoid using candles if possible; use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns instead.
WARMTH & HOME SAFETY
Keep your home safely heated and close off unused rooms to conserve warmth.
Wear layers of warm clothing, even indoors.
Use blankets, hats, and socks to maintain body heat.
Never use ovens, stoves, or grills to heat your home.
FOOD & MEDICATIONS
Ensure you have enough food, water, and medications to last several days.
Keep medications in a dry, easily accessible place.
Follow medication schedules closely and do not skip doses.
PREVENT FALLS
Keep walkways inside your home clear and well-lit.
Wear non-slip shoes or slippers.
Avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary during icy conditions.
HEALTH & WELL-BEING
Watch for signs of hypothermia such as shivering, confusion, or extreme fatigue.
Check in with family, neighbors, or caregivers regularly.
We have nurses on call 24/7—please do not hesitate to reach out if you feel unwell or have concerns.
EMERGENCY PLANNING
Know where to go or who to call if your home becomes unsafe.
If you experience a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.
Your safety is our priority. Please take these precautions seriously and reach out for help whenever needed. Stay warm and stay safe.
