"From 2016 to 2021, the use of mental health services by children ages 1 to 19 years old significantly increased, including a 20% increase in emergency room visits and a 61% increase in inpatient admissions."

COVID-19 may have been a driver for an increase in mental health concerns for children and teens, however studies show that mental health has been on the decline for some time.

After this past weekend's time shift, you may have personally recognized that your mood shifted with it.

This is common, as Daylight Savings Time is often accompanied by the very common "seasonal affective disorder," a depressive condition felt by more than 3 million people year.

But while it is common, it doesn't make it any easier to grapple alone. Consider taking proactive steps for your mental health, such as buying a light therapy lamp for your room, or going for walks in the morning sun (along with plenty of vitamin D).

You don't have to suffer alone. TMS Integrative Brain Institute is here to help. Please contact us today for a free phone consultation and see if transcranial magnetic stimulation is the right choice for you.

Find yourself losing sleep while scrolling endlessly on social media? You're not alone. Social media has the capacity to play a significant role in a person's mental health, be it positive or negative.

"The researchers behind a 2017 Canadian study confirmed this finding. They noted that students who use social media for more than 2 hours daily are considerably more likely to rate their mental health as fair or poor than occasional users.

A 2019 studyTrusted Source tied social media use to disrupted and delayed sleep. Regular, high quality sleep is essential for well-being, and evidence shows that sleeping problems contribute to adverse mental health effects, such as depression and memory loss.

Aside from the adverse effects on sleep, social media may trigger mental health struggles by exposing individuals to cyberbullying. In a 2020 survey of more than 6,000 individuals aged 10–18 years, researchers found that about half of them had experienced cyberbullying."

It's been a little while since we've shared a mental health tip, but this one is a very important one.

Sometimes, when we struggle with our mental health, we have to balance that struggle with our interpersonal relationships. But relationships are a two-way street of understanding, compassion and care.

Make sure you set appropriate boundaries with the ones you love. And give yourself permission to focus on yourself. It's natural to fear a negative response from others, which forces a person to stretch outside their comfort zone in a time of vulnerability. But by setting those boundaries, you are allowing yourself to build on your self-respect and self-love, and opening a healthy line of communication with others.

TMS Integrative Brain Institute is now taking new patients. If you struggle with treatment-resistant depression and are located near the Paoli, Pennsylvania area, please visit us at www.tmsibi.com to schedule your free consultation today.

There's been a lot of talk on mental health priorities this week, especially in regards to Simone Biles' decision to withdraw from the Olympic competitions, and a lot of the discussion stems from what some people view to be "responsibility." We'd like to talk about that.

Ms. Biles' decision was hard. No athlete, especially one at the top of their game, wants to sit on the bench, especially after months (or years!) of training. The choice to withdraw stems from a condition she, and many other gymnasts, have faced. It is referred to within the community as the "twisties," which drastically affects orientation when airborne.. In other words, by competing with this condition, she could have risked serious injury.

Not only that, but after she made what was very clearly one of the biggest, most difficult decisions of her life, she decided to speak outwardly and openly about everything. She expressed her very real fears for her physical health, and how she needed to prioritize her mental health for that reason. To us, that is the definition of responsibility. Imagine if the world could take her example to heart, and recognize that simple fact: mental health is physical health.

Simone Biles' choice this week to exit her Olympic event is a conversation on honesty, integrity and mental health. We applaud her very difficult decision, and we can't wait to see her return to the mat with renewed confidence and passion!

While summer vacations and beautiful weather are often great for soaking up the sun, the summer heat can actually be a driver for depression! Here are some things to keep an eye out for:

- Disrupted schedules or routines can make the season more difficult. This is especially prevalent for those with grade-school children.
- Body image issues tend to climb in the summer, as the warmer weather leads to less clothing worn. Pools, beaches, or any other social events end up getting avoided for the comforts of privacy.
- Heat, in general, can be oppressive! It can cause a decrease in home cooking (forcing one to order takeout or forgo food altogether), an increase in staying indoors (reducing natural vitamin D intake), and a decrease in physical activity.

What should you do?

- Get good sleep. Do your best to get the best amount of sleep that is right for your body, to keep you on track.
- Eat well. Summer is great for salads and fruits, and colder meals/snacks that are rich in vitamins and nutrients can improve the mood long-term.
- Exercise. Even if it's in an indoor gym, or in your air-conditioned living room, the physical activity will release endorphins that help in stabilizing moods.
- Get help. Find a therapist that works well with you, and works well with the issues you face. And consider additional treatment plans, such as TMS therapy. To learn more, visit http://www.tmsibi.com and contact us today!

"When should I seek help?"

Major depressive disorder is often associated with its symptoms, such as loss of energy and interest in activities, lack of concentration, and a feeling of hopelessness. Generally speaking, when these symptoms last for longer than two weeks at a time, it becomes necessary to seek out assistance.

But this isn't often easy. That feeling of hopelessness, combined with energy loss, can hinder even the simplest thoughts of accepting help. And those who suffer treatment-resistant depression know those feelings all too well.

You don't have to suffer with mental illness. There are more and more options for treatments - it just means finding the one that works best for you. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has been proven effective in over sixty clinical trials. 50% of patients achieved remission and 75% reported improvement.

What's the difference between TMS and ECT? A lot, actually!

ECT, or electroconvulsive therapy, works by applying direct electric currents to the patient's head while they are sedated and immobilized, intentionally causing a "therapeutic seizure" in order to reset the brain. While safer than it has been in the past, other potential side effects of ECT include headache, muscle aches, nausea, transient changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and transient arrhythmias.

TMS, or transcranial magnetic stimulation, does not involve the application of direct electrical currents to a patient's head. TMS is designed to activate the brain's healing process more gently by magnetically stimulating a very discrete part of the brain while avoiding global seizures and cognitive dysfunction. TMS involves few side effects, thereby enabling patients to remain awake and comfortable during treatments.
