Senior Citizen fun fact! 🧐📚

Did you know if you’re over the age of 65 you probably sweat less? Well it’s true! As we age our sweat glands shrink in size therefore causing less body odor under our arms. The sweat glands also react less to heat which is a plus.

However, that doesn’t mean senior citizens are not still sensitive to temperatures. They should still be careful in the extreme hot and cold weather.

If your loved ones are stilling driving around by themselves, here are some tips to keep them safe this winter.

Make sure the brakes have been tested. A brake failure can be bad anytime of the year, but especially when it's extremely cold out. Along with testing the brakes, you should also check the tire pressure and battery. Whether it's freezing rain or snow, having proper wipers can make the difference between getting in an accident or not. Additionally, make sure that you have an up-to-date AAA membership in case the car does break down. If you would like to take the preparation one step further, store the car in the garage or use a ride sharing service instead.

We hope everyone stays safe this winter season!

Winter can sure make it hard to spend time outside. Without being in the sun means we don't always get the required Vitamin D intake. Vitamin D is required for calcium absorption. and if we don't get enough, our bones can weaken over time. Vitamin D is also great for immune function. It can help reduce the risk of autoimmune diseases and help the body fend off illnesses.

In order to counter act Vitamin D loss, here are some foods to add to your diet this winter. Milk, orange juice, cheese, egg yolks, grains and seafood are all great options. Help your loved ones by making sure they get enough Vitamin D during the colder months.

Most people don't realize that hypothermia can actually occur inside the home as well. Here are some tips and tricks to avoid in home hypothermia, especially for our elders.

1. Try to keep the thermostat at a minimum of 68 degrees. The warmer the better.

2. Keep on a thick pair of socks and/or slippers. You would be surprised about how much body heat is lost through our feet.

3. Sleep in long pajamas/ sweatpants. The nights are always colder in the winter so dress accordingly.

4. Speaking of clothing, dress in layers even around your home. You would be surprised at how much warmth every layer adds.

5. Place towels and blankets under doorways to prevent drafts. Plastic over windowpanes can also make a big difference.

Isolation can be difficult for elders in the winter. Since the cold weather can pose a number of threats to senior citizens they may avoid situations where they have to leave the house. Seasonal depression also becomes more prominent during this time of year. They may have feelings of general depression created by the colder weather causing them to self isolate. Another reason elders might isolate during this time of year may be because they simply are not feeling the best. Often called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) causes symptoms of tiredness and lethargy, an increase of appetite, and a loss of energy. If you loved ones are not feeling in tip top shape they may cancel plans and limit their social activities. We recommend you check up on your elders this winter season and look out for these signs of isolation.
