There are 3 common considerations parents have when it comes to bars - protein, fiber, and sugar.

🫘 Protein Rich
Protein needs for kids vary by weight, so every kid is different. As an estimate, it’s roughly 16 g per day for small kids, going toward 20 a day as they get bigger, and keeps going up as they grow.

If we divide 20 g across 5 meals and snacks, we get 4 g of protein per meal and snack (3g for smaller kids). This is a quick way to tell if something has a lot or a little protein in it.

🌾 Fiber Rich
If you have a kid who’s low on fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, etc. a bar may be able to help. Kids 8 and under need 19 or 25 g of fiber per day, so that would be 4-5 g per meal or snack. It’s hard to find bars with a lot of fiber, which is why adding on a fruit and vegetable can help if fiber is your primary goal.

🍪 Lower Sugar
It’s recommended for kids ages 2+ to eat less than 25 g of added sugars per day (on average). While that number may not be practical for all families, it can put amounts of sugar into context. This is why, if sugar is top of mind, it is recommended to aim for a bar with less than 5-6g of added sugar.

Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs) in children younger than 1 year of age in the United States. The first years of your child’s life is filled with many opportunities to learn and grow. Try this critical thinking activity with your child next time you spend time together.

Activity: Stair Count (15 months - 2 years)

Use: Anytime, Anywhere

Description: When your child is learning to walk up and down stairs, hold their hand, and count each step you take. This helps them become familiar with their numbers and it's fun!

Brainy Background: Making connections between numbers and what they stand for (such as the steps your child climbs or the fingers on their hands), helps your child see that numbers aren't just words they memorize. They actually stand for quantities of things. This is the first step in learning math.

Children experience all of the same complicated, wonderful, confusing, and big emotions that adults do. It’s okay to feel all emotions, including feelings that are pleasant and uncomfortable. Emotions are important because they provide us with information about ourselves and our environment. They help us connect with one another. Learning how to notice, label, and express their feelings helps children feel more in control of their emotional experiences.

Encourage your elementary schooler to watch this video of kids talking about their emotions. Even better — watch it with your child and discuss these key findings together:

1️⃣ Label and name feelings to increase emotional vocabulary AND reinforce that you can feel more than one emotion at a time.
2️⃣ Notice body sensations that are attached to different emotions and provide clues for what they are feeling. Sometimes it's easier to notice physical symptoms first.
3️⃣ Rate the feeling of emotions on a scale of 1 to 10 to capture what we feel emotions in different amounts or intensities.

Today the Virginia Department of Public Health reiterated its commitment to the science based vaccine schedule that is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and many other major medical societies. Valley Pediatric Group will continue to follow and recommend this vaccine schedule as we believe there is very strong evidence it provides safe, effective protection against many diseases that once caused severe illness, disability and even death.
