Some lessons are learned the hard way. Skunks leave a long-lasting impression on our furry friends, literally! If they've been sprayed by a skunk, regular shampoo may not get that odor out. It definitely is going to take a bit of time for it to completely go away, but this recipe is one of the most tried and true that we recommend if your pet has been sprayed by a skunk:
Mix the following ingredients together in a bowl (DO NOT MIX IN CLOSED CONTAINER AS A CHEMICAL REACTION COULD CAUSE THE SEALED BOTTLE TO EXPLODE):
1 Quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 Cup Baking Soda
1tsp of Blue Dawn Dish soap
Work the solution thoroughly into your dog's coat, paying close attention to the areas where they were sprayed. Be sure to avoid your pet's eyes, ears, and mouth. Allow the solution to remain on your dog for about 5-10 minutes, or until the odor is noticeably reduced. Hydrogen peroxide can lighten or bleach fur, so avoid leaving it on for extended periods. Rinse thoroughly: Use warm (not hot) water to completely rinse the solution from your dog's fur. Shampoo (optional): For an extra measure, you can follow with a regular pet shampoo to help restore the natural pH balance of your dog's fur. Towel dry and warm: Towel dry your dog and keep them in a warm area to prevent chilling.
