The Coldwell Banker Realty White Bear Lake & Shoreview offices raised an incredible $6,000 to support Hammer & NER through their holiday silent auction and other efforts!

Beyond their generosity, the team has also rolled up their sleeves to volunteer—helping with Cooks in the Kitchen, yard work, and more. 🙌

We’re so grateful for their continued support in helping people with disabilities live full, meaningful lives.

After 44 incredible years, we’re celebrating the retirement of Ellen Timmerman-Borer.

Ellen’s journey began in 1982 as a Direct Support Professional. Over the decades, her passion for advocacy and deep commitment to our mission helped shape the future of Hammer & NER—leading her to the role of Chief Development Officer and Campaign Director.

This week, we had the honor of celebrating Ellen twice—first with a staff gathering at our West office, and again last night at our end-of-campaign celebration, which doubled as a tribute to her remarkable career.

Through her visionary work in communications and fundraising, Ellen didn’t just support our mission—she helped build it. Her impact reaches across our organization and throughout the West and East Metro communities.

Please join us in thanking Ellen for 44 years of leadership, heart, and unwavering dedication. Congratulations on your retirement!

It’s Volunteer Appreciation Week Day 6!

Our Make a Friend, Be a Friend program connects volunteers with people we support who are looking for a friend. Matched based on mutual interests, these connections expand the circle of community, by engaging in fun activities together. Many of these friendships have lasted for years! Volunteer Appreciation Week continues!

We recently celebrated three years of Cooks in the Kitchen with our fantastic volunteers! As a way to thank them for their dedication and support, each volunteer was given a Cooks in the Kitchen recipe binder for their own use, with the recipes reconfigured from serving 40 to serving 6. Volunteers have made an astounding 24,000 meals for those we support and their staff in our homes! Thank you for the delicious meals!

It's Day 4 of Volunteer Appreciation Week!

For more than a decade, students from the Wayzata High School Volunteer Club have helped in our homes and at Reach for Ralph, the Family Day Picnic, our Haunted House and with Yard Clean Up. They have also helped celebrate the holidays by making homemade seasonal cards for everyone in our residences. It's Volunteer Appreciation Week!

Through the efforts of volunteer Kim Mesun, Christ Memorial Lutheran Church has “adopted” our 1st Avenue home. The men that live there enjoy many activities and kindnesses from the church. Recently they celebrated Easter with a sub sandwich dinner, gifts including U of MN gear, and an Easter egg hunt. As happened last year, one of the eggs is still missing!

It's Volunteer Appreciation Week!

When our dear Patty passed away recently, Brenda Barthel, one of our Program Directors, asked if we had a volunteer who could make 3 quilts from Patty’s vibrant clothing. Linda Christianson answered the call, and after many hours of work, delivered the quilts. She really captured Patty’s spirit! Besides quilting, Linda is also a Hammer Travel volunteer! Thank you Linda for your time, care and creativity!

After 36 incredible years, we’re celebrating the retirement of Direct Support Professional, Jan Hopper! 🎉

Jan worked her final shift at our Rockford home on April 15, marking the end of a truly remarkable career filled with compassion, connection, and dedication to the people we support.

To celebrate, Jan enjoyed an Oldtimer’s Burger at Chili’s—well earned after more than three decades of making a difference! 🍔

While Jan is retiring from her role, we’re thrilled that this isn’t goodbye. She plans to stay involved as a house volunteer, continuing to spend time with the ladies through crafts, games, concerts, and 1:1 visits. 💛

As her team shared, “We are excited for her to still be part of the Rockford Team.” And we couldn’t agree more.

Jan’s impact over the years is something truly special. A few years back, she reflected on her journey at Hammer in our Legacies magazine—beautifully capturing the meaning behind “the family we choose.”
