is the inspirational, true story of a mother and daughter's 14-year journey for a cure to an agonizing illness. Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that form inside the body as a result of trauma, infection or inflammation. Adhesions cause the internal organs to become fused together, which results in pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. Hushed among physicians, sufferers of this disorder are often misdiagnosed or quickly dismissed as being "depressed". Most adhesion sufferers will spend 7-10 years wandering from doctor to doctor for an answer to debilitating pain. In 1988, at the age of 13, my daughter's life came to a screeching halt due to severe abdominal pain. Fourteen years of her life were lost to this insidious illness as we fought for an answer to her pain. My passion is promoting ARD (adhesion related disorder) awareness.

And here we are....2020...and the focus remains on endometriosis with hardly a nod given to the debilitating subsequent condition few in medicine will even acknowledge...even though they are well aware of the condition: adhesions.

Adhesions are often the culprit behind nausea, vomiting...literally screaming in pain...as adhesions bind on internal organs.

Endometriosis affects roughly 2 million women in the UK, so why do they have to fight to be heard?

The No. 1 method for minimizing abdominal adhesions is to have a minimally invasive procedure. These days, most procedures have minimally invasive options, but some surgeons still won’t do them.

I advise my patients to ask about these alternatives and to request a referral if they want one. There is clear evidence that there is less scar tissue that results from a laparoscopic surgery.

Internal scars more trouble than visible ones

Intestinal obstruction is the partial or complete blockage of the movement of food, fluids, air, or stool through the intestines. Abdominal adhesions are the most common cause of obstruction of the small intestine. Intestinal obstruction may lead to lack of blood flow to the blocked part of the intestine and death of the blood-starved intestinal tissues
peritonitis, an infection of the lining of the abdominal cavity
Intestinal obstruction can be life-threatening. People with symptoms of a complete blockage—which include abdominal pain and passing no fluids, stool, or gas—should seek medical attention right away. (www.niddk.nih.gov)

Adhesions can also be the culprit behind many cases of infertility.

Adhesions and Infertility Pelvic adhesions are also commonly referred to as scar tissue. Adhesions are areas of fibrous tissue that form as a result of the healing process which remain after the original inflammation or trauma has healed. Excerpt: ......research into how the gastrointestinal tract ends up driving diseases, particularly in situations and ways no one had foreseen. When digestive proteases, or enzymes, leak outside the GI tract, they can cause vast amounts of damage, from short-term illnesses to chronic conditions and life-threatening organ failure.

Leading Biosciences is applying the science of digestive proteases to treating or preventing multiple diseases and conditions, starting with delayed...

Double-edged sword?

Excerpt: Tissue grows into the mesh’s pores over time. This “ingrowth” should strengthen the repair. But it did not always strengthen repairs. And the mesh sometimes adhered to organs in the body.

Ethicon pulled a version of its Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh off the market. The company faces hundreds of lawsuits over hernia repair injuries.

Excerpt: Of patients who undergo abdominal surgery, 93 percent develop abdominal adhesions. Surgery in the lower abdomen and pelvis, including bowel and gynecological operations, carries an even greater chance of abdominal adhesions. Abdominal adhesions can become larger and tighter as time passes, sometimes causing problems years after surgery.
