Inflammation is our body’s response to injury. But when it comes to heart health, the main concern is chronic, low-grade systemic inflammation. This is a persistent, mild immune response where the body’s defenses stay activated without a clear infection. It’s linked to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.

Chronic inflammation is often driven by lifestyle factors, but simple, everyday choices can help protect your heart:

• Eat a heart-healthy diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and healthy oils.
• Limit processed foods.
• Be physically active. Any movement is better than none.
• Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night.
• Manage stress with meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.
• Avoid smoking.
• Keep up with preventative medical care.
• Protect yourself from infections like the flu.

Donating blood saves lives. Every day, more than 38,000 blood donations are needed to support patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, and emergency care.

Healthy adults age 16 and older, with parental consent for minors, and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate every 56 days. The donation itself takes less than an hour, and the entire visit typically lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours.

If you’re looking for an easy way to help others, consider making a blood donation today.

As we age, we begin to lose muscle mass, bone density, and balance. Strength training helps slow that loss and even rebuilds strength. It supports healthier aging by improving mobility and protecting joints, and it also helps to reduce the risk of falling while supporting heart and brain health.

It’s never too late to start strength training. Even a few sessions each week can make a meaningful difference at any age. If you’re interested in incorporating simple strength moves into your routine, consider:

• Chair squats
• Wall push-ups
• Resistance band exercises
• Light dumbbell or household-weight lifts
• Standing balance exercises

Be sure to consult your healthcare provider before starting any program.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression linked to changes in the seasons, most often beginning in fall or winter when daylight decreases. It’s believed to be related to reduced sunlight affecting the body’s internal clock and mood-regulating chemicals.

Symptoms of SAD can include low energy, persistent sadness, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of hopelessness. But there are ways to help prevent or lessen the effects of it. For starters, try to get out in the sunlight daily. Even on cloudy days, outdoor light is brighter than indoor lighting. If you can’t get outside, sit by a window.

In addition, exposing yourself to light therapy, especially in the morning, can help as well. Light therapy lamps can be purchased through numerous retailers that are designed to mimic natural sunlight with bright, UV-filtered light.

As with any health concern, however, always seek the advice of your health professional.
